Aims and scope

Spatial Information Research is an international, interdisciplinary journal dedicated to publishing high-quality original research articles in spatial information science.  The focus of the journal is on all aspects of the application of spatial information science exploring cross-disciplinary exchange of knowledge within and across sectors and disciplines, including but not limited to:

  • Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
  • Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS)
  • Remote Sensing and sensor networks
  • Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV)
  • Self-driving vehicles including UAM (Urban Air Mobility)
  • Cartography, photogrammetry and image processing
  • Spatial statistics and 3D visualization
  • Topographic surveys
  • Mobile mapping
  • Smart cities and Internet of Things (IoT)
  • Open-source geospatial software, spatial big-data, spatial artificial intelligence
  • Digital twins, cyber-physical systems, and the metaverse

The boundary of acceptable subject matter has been intentionally left flexible so that Spatial Information Research can follow trends in research activity, technological applications and future developments to build a bridge between science and practice, mixing academic and industrial approaches to spatial information science in a way unlike any other international journal in this field.

Spatial Information Research publishes best practice examples (case reports) and reviews with a link (or a potential link) to spatial information. In this regard, the journal is interested in articles having a significant social science component (e.g. spatial information law, cadaster, real property, market surveys, marketing strategy, urban planning, regional development, public administration and business administration) that address the social drivers or policy processes of spatial information.

The different types of article published in Spatial Information Research are indicated as below:

• Original research article: Providing a novel and original contribution to the scientific fields of study outlined above.
• Review paper (extensive state-of-the-art surveys of established or emerging topics or application areas);
• Special case reports (new useful ideas and brief pertinent comments of a technical nature).
