Euro-Mediterranean Journal for Environmental Integration - Special Issue

Health Risks from Infectious Diseases in a Changing Mediterranean Environment

Description:
The rapid spread of SARS-CoV-2 and of the associated Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) necessitate strategic preparedness for future waves, public health plans and strengthening of health-care systems. Research on diagnostic tests and treatments are in progress and the dynamics of SARS-CoV-2 transmission are being investigated.

An additional challenge is the environmental and climatological impact on infectious diseases and public health.
For instance:

  • Do environmental and climate changes affect infectious diseases outbreaks and what are the underlying mechanisms?
  • Can environmental conditions that favor spread of infectious pathogens be quickly identified and monitored?
  • How will outbreaks of infectious diseases and interventions to contain or mitigate them affect population health, anthropogenic emissions, global environment, climate change and economic output?

This special issue aims to improve our understanding of the current phenomenon and provide the latest developments on causes, impacts and interactions between environment, climate, infectious diseases, and public health. This special issue will focus on the Mediterranean Environment and surrounding regions that have been experiencing complex emergencies with fragile health systems and disease surveillance in order to inform decision-making and thus enhance response capacity and public health preparedness.

Specific topics include (but not limited to):

  • Impacts of environment and climate change on outbreaks of infectious diseases
  • Monitoring, surveillance and early-warning systems for outbreaks of infectious diseases and for identification of vulnerable regions, communities, and populations
  • Simulation and prediction of infectious disease spread
  • Strategies and measures to slow down or contain spread of infectious diseases between countries, regions, cities, communities, and populations
  • Impacts of infectious diseases and measures taken to control them on air pollution, emissions, ecological environment, public health, society, and economy.
