Euro-Mediterranean Journal for Environmental Integration - Special Issue

SPATIAL ENVIRONMENTAL PLANNING & MANAGMENT: improving cities’ and regions’ resilience.

Cities and regions can be considered as highly complex systems in terms of their spatial organization and function as well as in terms of development, management, governance and policy. They are confronted with major urban and economic developments, as well as challenges of climate change, different types of crisis (energy, food, financial, immigration), and increasing environmental vulnerability. Therefore interventions, policies and management not only have to accommodate future urban growth but also to guarantee environmental sustainability.

Environmental issues of conflict, exposure and resilience have gained a lot of attention in recent years, both in academia and practice. This special issue aims to increase our understanding on urban and regional environmental pressures, conflicts, and vulnerabilities. It focuses on particular environmental issues in a variety of geographical scales and seeks to discuss cases of management and possible policy and planning solutions.

The issue contains extended versions of scientific papers that presented at the CEST2019 and few invited papers that cover thematic fields related to environmental spatial planning and management. These thematic fields resulted from an attempt to promote a synthetic approach and highlight the complementarity and synergy of natural resources management and planning, natural disaster and environmental threats, management and planning of marine environment, green spatial planning strategies and environmental policy instruments.

We hope that the present volume will substantially and creatively contribute to the development of an international scientific dialogue on the contemporary issues of environmental spatial planning. Finally, the editors would like to thank all the authors for their contributions, as well as the reviewers and the members of the Scientific Board.
