Submission window: now – March 15, 2022

Subject of the Special Issue:

Fueled by the rise of computational power and the tremendously increasing availability of data in the the construction and real estate sector, a growing body of literature applies computer-based techniques to gain new knowledge or confirming previous results. On the one hand, this trend offers promising approaches to how we can easily and rapidly understand the interconnection of many factors within the real estate sector; on the other hand, it may create problems regarding data protection, integrity, or vulnerability.

This Call for Papers seeks contributions in all fields of digitalization/AI/ML and their impact on the construction and real estate sector. The impact of digitalization begins at the planning process and includes all phases of the life cycle: construction, financing, usage, ownership, management, etc.

To broaden the understanding of digitalization, we cordially invite researchers – also early career researchers – to submit papers from all areas and related fields. Both theoretical and quantitative or qualitative empirical papers are welcome. Because the ZIÖ pursues an interdisciplinary approach, researchers from any real estate-related discipline are invited to submit relevant papers, in particular from the areas of Business Administration, Economics, Architecture, Urban Planning, Law, Construction Engineering, Psychology, Sociology, Computer Science, Mathematics, and Medicine.

Topics may include, but are not limited to:

  • role of technology and individualization (robotics, smart buildings, BIM, GIS)
  • general impact of digitalization and/or big data (economics or ethical issues)
  • application of application of big data analytics or machine learning methods (e.g. pricing, planning)
  • management and financing (PropTechs, DLT, Blockchain)
  • securitization and ownership (tokenization, smart contract)
