Call For Papers: Topical Collection on Biotechnological Innovations from Black Scientists

AfroBioTech 2020

The AfroBiotech conference, launched in 2019, features some of the nation’s leading academic, industrial and public-serving scientists, engineers and technologists in medical and biological engineering. Given the current crises in global health and racial justice, sustaining our community of emerging and successful Black scientists is more important than ever. AfroBiotech showcases the innovation, contributions and leadership of our diverse engineering community while also inspiring the next generation of students and scholars. The conference allows us to share our exciting, cutting-edge work at the intersection of engineering and medicine and to continue to create greater visibility, recognition, and empowerment of talented, Black scientists and bioengineers. The conference has received dozens of excellent research abstracts from young trainees, trailblazers, and accomplished senior scientists over the past two years.

In this Topical Collection, we welcome contributions from AfroBiotech attendees and Black scientists in terms of basic research insights and new technologies that are grounded in or inspired by biological processes. We also welcome research that provides a strong societal benefit for biomedical and other technological needs of the Black community. We’d like to invite papers related to the most recent advancements in the following, and related, topics:

  • Regenerative Engineering
  • Health and Medical Applications
  • Microbiome and Immunoengineering
  • Biological Chemistry and Nanotechnology
  • Bioengineering and Our Community - reviews and commentaries on the state and impact of innovations from and progress for Black scientists in biotechnology
