Journal of the Economic Science Association - Call for Papers: Behavioral and Experimental Economics for Innovative Policy-Making

CIRANO Workshop (April 20-21, 2023) and Special Issue of JESA

We have the pleasure to announce the CIRANO workshop and a special issue of the Journal of the Economic Science Association in memory of Claude Montmarquette.

Claude Montmarquette was professor of Economics, holder of the Bell-Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec chair in Experimental Economics at the Université de Montréal, a research fellow and a long-term president of CIRANO. He has been an ardent promoter of the use of behavioral economics and economic experiments for the design and evaluation of public policies, notably in the domain of education, public finance, and labor.

Economic and social policy-making is facing major new challenges at the global level and, as Claude, we believe that experimental methods in the field, in the lab and in the society can provide powerful tools to design, evaluate and support innovative private and public policies. In light of Claude’s contributions to the development of behavioral and experimental economics, especially in Québec and Canada, we are soliciting manuscripts for the CIRANO Workshop and the special issue of JESA on “Behavioral and Experimental Economics for Innovative Policy-Making.”

In particular, we are interested in policy-oriented papers that extend and renew the existing experimental and behavioral literature as related to:

• behavioral mechanism design
• labor market policies related to job matching, career-building, incentives
• education and training policies
• innovation, competition policy and industrial organization
• environmental policies in the face of climate change
• nudging and paternalism
• tax and insurance policies
• experimental methods for policy evaluation

We are especially delighted to announce two keynote speakers at the CIRANO Workshop:
Prof. Dorothea Kübler, professor of Economics at the Technical University of Berlin and director of the Department of Market Behavior at the WZB,
and
Prof. Philip Oreopoulos, Professor of Economics and Public Policy at the University of Toronto, National Bureau of Economic Research, Research Associate, Jamal Poverty Action Lab, North America Co-Chair in Education.

Submission:
Original papers or replication studies are welcome. The submission deadline for papers or extended abstracts for the workshop is November 12, 2022, on the CIRANO website (this opens in a new tab). Papers for the special issue should include an experiment and must not exceed 5,000 words, including references, tables, figures and abstract. The submission deadline for papers to the special issue is May 15, 2023.
