Planned publication issue: The September 2021 Issue

Although the post-2008 world economy was trapped in a slow growth–low interest rates–escalating trade tensions regime, the COVID-19 pandemic has caused a major disruption in the European Union (EU) economy. After March 2020, the EU’s GDP and employment levels are steadily declining, leading to debt explosions and bankruptcies. Modelling and analysis by international organizations point out that a full recovery will not be achieved until the year 2025, and that the COVID-19 pandemic may lead to deep transformations of both the national and the EU economic, institutional and political systems.

The Evolutionary and Institutional Economics Review (EIER) plans to publish a special issue on the EU economy after the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak. For this special issue, we are announcing a wide-ranging call for research papers that analyze the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on various spheres of the EU economy and corresponding socio-political structures and mechanisms. We welcome empirical research papers, studies with theoretical perspectives, and contributions that develop appropriate frameworks for measuring, evaluating and preventing the direct and indirect impacts of the pandemic on the overall EU economy and its members.

Contributions on all relevant topics, both theoretical and applied, will be of interest and are welcome. Papers may broadly cover the following areas but are not limited to these sample topics.

  • Intersectoral analysis of the EU economy and the COVID-19 effects
  • The effects of COVID-19 on the EU supply chain
  • Effective coordination between fiscal, monetary, income, and structural policies
  • EU crisis management, institutional and political transformations, and recovery strategies
  • Unemployment in EU amid COVID-19
  • International trade, income distribution, economic growth,  and the COVID-19 effects
  • EU financial markets’ behaviour after the COVID-19 outbreak
  • EU tourism forecasting amid COVID-19
  • Sustainable economic development in the EU after COVID-19
