Intelligent Systems for Safer Social Media

The inexpensive social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram undoubtedly empower society by giving people the freedom to voice their opinions and the facility to seek help from others in the online community. These platforms also have an unmistakable dark side, which includes but are not limited to cyberbullying, cyberstalking, cyberterrorism, e-bile, fake news, flaming, hate speech, impersonation, pornography, and trolling. Chamath Palihapitiya, a former Facebook executive, recently regretted that social media applications are ripping apart the social fabric of how society works. In recent times several cases of suicide, depression, and fear are reported through different news media.

The objective of this special issue is to gather original research works contributing to the literature in terms of using intelligent systems for a safer social media. This special issue welcomes the scientific community to contribute research papers from a wide variety of research areas such as artificial intelligence community with better intelligent models, security community for better models for preserving privacy and providing security to the applications. Network scientists are also welcome to propose models for better utilization of network media proving security.

The topics of interests in this special issue include, but are not limited to:
-    Early detection of radicalization
-    Cyber predator detections and prevention mechanism
-    Cyberstalking detections and prevention mechanism
-    Privacy preservation in social media
-    Analysis and prevention of misinformation effects (e.g. echo-chambers, filter bubbles)
-    Hate speech detection and countermeasures (abusive language, cyberbullying, etc.)
-    Modelling diffusion and propagation path of harmful content in social media
-    Fairness and transparency 
-    Explainability and transparency
-    Dataset collection and annotation methodologies
-    Content moderation strategies
-    Information security and social media
