Journal of Psychosocial Rehabilitation and Mental Health - Call for Special Issue Papers on 'Bridging Cultures, Building Lives: Navigating Transcultural crossroads in Psychosocial Rehabilitation in a Shrinking World'

Psychosocial rehabilitation plays a vital role in supporting individuals with severe mental illnesses (SMI) towards recovery, fostering independence, and improving quality of life. However, the globalised world presents unique challenges in ensuring culturally sensitive and equitable rehabilitation services. This special issue of The Journal of Psychosocial Rehabilitation and Mental Health (this opens in a new tab) calls for papers that explore the transcultural aspects and issues in psychosocial rehabilitation.

Navigating the Cultural Landscape: Psychosocial rehabilitation interventions are often developed and implemented within specific cultural contexts. Yet, the lived experiences of individuals with SMI transcend cultural boundaries. Understanding the impact of cultural factors on illness perception, help-seeking behaviors, and treatment preferences is crucial for effective rehabilitation.
This special issue welcomes contributions that explore:

  • Cultural variations in the expression and understanding of mental illness that could help address rehabilitation needs of specific populations.
  • The influence of cultural values and beliefs on rehabilitation goals and approaches.
  • Navigating cultural nuances in communication and therapeutic relationships.
  • The role of cultural identity in shaping recovery journeys.

Beyond Borders, Towards Equity: In an increasingly interconnected world, addressing the needs of diverse populations necessitates acknowledging the limitations of culturally homogenous models. This special issue seeks to:

  • Provide an overview of effective models of delivery of psychosocial rehabilitation in different countries.
  • Showcase culturally adapted and evidence-based rehabilitation practices across various countries.
  • Highlight innovative approaches to bridging cultural gaps in service delivery.
  • Promote collaboration between researchers, practitioners, and service users from diverse cultural backgrounds.
  • Advocate for culturally sensitive and equitable access to quality mental health services for all.

Join the Conversation: We encourage submissions that contribute to a deeper understanding of transcultural challenges and opportunities in psychosocial rehabilitation. By sharing knowledge and experiences, we can work towards building culturally responsive and inclusive systems that empower individuals with SMI on their journeys towards recovery and well-being.
