Medical Science Educator - Types of Submissions

Medical Science Educator invites the following types of submissions:

Innovation

Innovations are publications intended to be a means for rapid dissemination of novel ideas in medical education, which are not yet fully supported by extensive research. Each Innovation must have an abstract of no more than 50 words. Each manuscript cannot exceed 750 total words, and the text is not separated into sections. A single data table may be included. References may be included, but any references numbering over 3 will count toward total word count.

Short Communications

The Short Communication format is designed to accommodate brief observations that do not warrant full length papers but are longer and contain more data than Innovations. Each Short Communication must have an abstract of no more than 100 words. The text is separated into the following sections: Background, Activity, Results & Discussion, and References to current literature. The total Short Communication should not exceed 1500 words and the number of Figures and Tables should not exceed 3.

Original Research

Research manuscripts describe observations in Medical Education, and must include an Abstract of no more than 250 words, Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, Conclusions and References to current literature section. Tables & Figures with legends are optional. Research manuscripts are usually between 3000-5000 words in length, but longer papers will be accepted if the context warrants the inclusion of more text.

Monograph

Monographs are articles on a specific topic of general interest to medical educators. This category contains descriptive and how-to/tips papers. Each Monograph must have an abstract of no more than 100 words. Monographs are usually between 3000-5000 words in length, but longer papers will be accepted if the context warrants the inclusion of more text. Long manuscripts may be shortened on review.

Commentary

Commentary provides the opportunity for authors to submit editorials, essays, viewpoints, trends, opinions and critiques on a variety of topics in medical science education. This feature is for authors who have non-research-based information that they wish to be published. Each Commentary must have an abstract of no more than 100 words. The manuscript should not exceed 3000 words.

Letter to the Editor

Letters should be short, clear and grammatically correct and should provide opinions, comments, criticisms and questions regarding published articles. A Letter should not exceed 400 words.

Systematic/Scoping Reviews

The journal welcomes systematic reviews (exhaustive summary of current literature relevant to a research question) and scoping reviews (identifying concepts) of the literature on a specific subject of general interest to medical educators. Each review must have an abstract of no more than 100 words. Reviews are usually between 3000-4000 words in length, but longer papers will be accepted if the context warrants the inclusion of more text.

Book Reviews

Many of our authors are interested in reporting on books relevant to medical education. Each Book Review must have an abstract of no more than 50 words. Book reviews can only be submitted to the Journal after prior consulting of and approval by the Editor-in-Chief.

Meeting Report

This type of publication is offered to organizations who like to report back on their Annual Meeting or Conference. The meeting has to be related to Medical Education and appropriate to the readership of Medical Science Educator, as to be decided on by the Editor-in-Chief. The size of a Meeting Report is limited to 5 pages in print. In those pages the organization can give an overview of the meeting program, describe achieved results but also publish several abstracts of meeting presentations. Meeting Reports can only be submitted to the Journal after prior consulting of and approval by the Editor-in-Chief.

Announcements

Individuals wishing to post medical education related announcements in the Journal should send their requests directly to the Editor-in-Chief. Announcements may be IAMSE-related, announcements from other medical education organizations, medical education conference information or international issues affecting medical education.

Health Science Case Studies

Case Studies are a valuable contribution to our journal and to our readership. In the report, the author describes a clinical patient presentation and relates this case to the underlying health sciences. The Case Study must be presented in such a way that it can be used by readers in their own teaching at their own institution. Each Case Study must have an abstract of no more than 150 words, and the manuscript should not exceed a maximum of 1200 words. Case Studies can only be submitted after consultation with the Editor-in-Chief, and will be coordinated by a designated Editorial Board member.
