Academic Psychiatry - Welcome the Journal’s Three New Associate Editors

Enrico Castillo, M.D., M.S.H.P.M., is the Associate Vice Chair for Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion at the University of California – Los Angeles (UCLA) Department of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences. He is a faculty member in the Center for Social Medicine and a member of the California State Council on Criminal Justice and Behavioral Health. Dr. Castillo’s research focuses on health equity, serious mental illness, and community-public-academic partnerships, with the aim to improve the capacity of public systems to address inequities. He currently leads a project funded by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) on the jail-to-homelessness pipeline experienced by individuals with serious mental illness. Dr. Castillo holds national leadership roles in research and medical education. He was a member of the second cohort of the New Voices Initiative of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. He is a member of the Mental Health Advisory Committee of the Association of American Medical Colleges and a member of the American Psychiatric Association’s Council for Advocacy and Government Relations. He is a faculty member in the Career Development Institute for Psychiatry and is a member of the content development and review team of the National Anti-racism in Medicine Curriculum Coalition. He is also a column editor for Research, Community, and Services Partnerships for the journal Psychiatric Services and serves on the editorial board of Community Mental Health Journal. He is a member of the American Association of Directors of Psychiatric Residency Training. Prior to taking on this new role, he was an editorial board member of Academic Psychiatry.

Andreea Seritan, M.D.

Andreea Seritan, M.D., is a geriatric psychiatrist and professor at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). Dr. Seritan graduated from Carol Davila University in Bucharest, Romania, before immigrating to the USA with her family. She completed her psychiatry residency at Baylor College of Medicine/Menninger in Houston, Texas, followed by a geriatric psychiatry fellowship at the University of California, Los Angeles. Prior to joining UCSF in 2015, Dr. Seritan worked at the University of California, Davis School of Medicine, where she also served as associate dean for student wellness. Her clinical and research interests include the psychiatric manifestations of neurodegenerative diseases, in particular Parkinson's disease. Dr. Seritan has been an active peer reviewer and Academic Psychiatry editorial board member since 2014 and guest edited the journal’s special collection of articles on Climate Change and Mental Health Education. She is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, the Association for Academic Psychiatry (AAP), and the American Association for Geriatric Psychiatry, as well as a committed mentor, having won the AAP Roberts Award for Inspirational Mentorship in Academic Psychiatry. She has authored or coauthored over 100 articles and book chapters. Dr. Seritan is thrilled to join the journal’s editorial team and continue to learn and develop her educational scholarship skills.

Lia A. Thomas, M.D.

Lia Thomas, M.D., is a Professor and an Associate Residency Program Director in the Department of Psychiatry at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Texas. Dr. Thomas received her bachelor's degree in Neuroscience from Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts, and her medical degree from Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans, Louisiana. She completed her psychiatry residency at UT Southwestern, and now works clinically at the VA North Texas.  At the VA, Dr. Thomas services as the Director of Mental Health Education, Training and Research, and cares for Veterans with posttraumatic stress disorder and other co-occurring conditions. Dr. Thomas is passionate about education and development of psychiatry learning of medical trainees at all levels and is involved in committees at both the Association of Directors of Medical Student Education in Psychiatry (ADMSEP) and the American Association of Directors of Psychiatric Residency Training. Her academic interests include diversity and inclusion curriculum in psychiatric education, equitable residency recruitment practices, and resident workforce issues. Dr. Thomas has contributed numerous articles and book chapters and is a three-time recipient of the ADMSEP Scholarly Publication award.  Dr. Thomas has previously served on the editorial board of Academic Psychiatry and a guest editor for the journal’s special topical collection on US Medical School Curriculum Reform Effects on Education in Psychiatry and is honored to now serve as one of the journal’s associate editors.
