Call for papers: New Paradigms for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Training

Academic Psychiatry is developing a collection of papers about new models for child and adolescent psychiatry training under the direction of Guest Editor Erica Shoemaker, MD, MPH. This collection will include not only a special print issue but also an online topical collection that will begin right away and continue to be curated and grow.

We are looking for papers that address recruitment, workforce development, and training models in child psychiatry. Should we recruit into CAP training directly from medical school or remain with our current advanced-training (fellowship) model? Are there successful strategies for recruitment into community programs and those in smaller cities?

We are also interested in proposals about whether the content of CAP training should change to prepare fellows for evolving practice models. Should we shift our curriculum to emphasize both direct care skills and indirect skills like telepsychiatry, integrated care, and team leadership (including supervision of advanced practice providers)? Would we need to change the length of CAP residency to train CAPs in both direct care and these new indirect models?

The possibility of changing the content and length of CAP training raises the fundamental question of whether CAP training programs should remain affiliated with general psychiatry programs or whether they could operate independently.

Lastly, how would we obtain stakeholder support within departments and medical centers, as well as secure funds, for these new training models?

We especially seek works driven by quantitative and qualitative data.

  • Rigorous analyses (Systematic and Other Reviews, Annotated Bibliographies, Commentaries)
  • Educational Case Reports (note: outcome data are expected, such as participant feedback)
  • Columns (“Down to Earth” Academic Skills, Media, Missions)
  • Perspectives (Faculty Viewpoint, The Learner’s Voice, Letters to the Editor, Poetry)
