Prof. Zhai Wanming, Editor-in-Chief of Railway Engineering Science, the academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, chair professor of Southwest Jiaotong University, was elected as an international member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering (NAE) on February 9, 2021, EST of US, for his contributions to the design and operation of high-speed rail transportation networks. This year, a total of 129 engineering and technological elites were awarded by NAE the highest professional honor throughout the world, including 106 American natives and 23 internationals from China, Germany, France, Britain, Japan, Canada, etc., and Prof. Wanming Zhai is the only foreign Academician in the rail transit engineering field.

The NAE is the highest-level academic institution of engineering and technology in the US, and also a world-renowned academy of engineering. Election to the NAE is among the highest professional distinctions accorded to engineers who have made outstanding contributions to engineering research, practice, or education.
