The aetiology of eating and weight disorders (EWDs) is still not completely understood and treatment strategies still need to be improved. In the last decades, many research groups have focused on the role of personality disturbances in EWD aetiology and outcome, showing that it is commonly present in patients with EWDs and it seems to be also involved in EWDs symptomatology features and treatment response. It is widely accepted that neurobiological, psychological, and social/cultural factors are involved in EWDs phatophysiology and outcome. In particular, this widely accepted neurobiological model of AN suggests that AN patients tend to have childhood temperament and personality traits which may be linked to neurobiological risk factors for developing AN, showing that personality characteristics may precede and play a key role in AN onset. At the same time, it remains open the debate on usefulness and reliability of personality disturbance assessment in adolescence, the period of life which has the highest rate of onset of EWDs. We believe that relationships between personality and EWD needs to be better explored and classified and we aim to gain several new insights on this topic:

  • to stimulate further research in this field and increase awareness within the scientific community on the role of personality disturbances in EWDs aetiology, outcome and treatment impact
  • to give a important hub for scientific discussion based on data investigating different perspectives of personality disturbances in EWDs (eg. from neurobiological to psychometric)
  • to involve key researchers to make progress in this field of research.

Overall, we expect to improve our knowledge regarding the role of personality in EWDs.
