Call for Papers for New Collection- Futures of Global Risks

European Journal of Futures Research is launching a new collection titled "Futures of Global Risks". Call for submissions! For more details, click on the link above.

Featured Collection: Futures of learning and emergent issues in education

As we move further into the 21st century, we need to renew our understanding of what it means to learn, teach, and develop new knowledge. Education systems and learning processes for people of all ages are needed to navigate uncertainty, address known problems, identify new ones, and be able to detect and make the sense of emergent issues and opportunities. The roles of education and learning are also becoming more essential in solving the pressing global ecological, cultural, societal and economic challenges. One pathway for renewal is the development of futures learning at all levels of education and in wider society. These developments are highlighted in this article collection on the futures of learning, guest edited by Maija Mäki and Ville Lauttamäki. Enjoy reading!

Featured Collection: Futures of Democracy

Since 2005, we have seen a global decline in the number of democracies. Even established and old democracies are no longer immune from tipping over into authoritarian regimes. These developments call for a topical collection of the European Journal for Futures Research, guest edited by Markus Pausch, Christophe Bisson, and Erik F. Øverland, to take a closer look at the futures of democracy. Start reading here!

Featured Collection: Politicization of Sociotechnical Futures. Prerequisites and limits

It is our pleasure to introduce the Article Collection on ‘Politicization of Sociotechnical Futures. Prerequisites and limits’, guest edited by Paulina Dobroć, Andreas Lösch, and Maximilian Roßmann.
The goal of this topical collection is to make significant progress in addressing the politicization of sociotechnical futures as well as to collect and bring together the diversity of existing research on the politicization of the future. The topical collection addresses the following issues: What are the approaches to studying the politicization of the future and what are the current futures that guide contemporary debates? What is the significance of the politicization of the future currently? How the interplay of contextual constellations and forms shape the processes of politicization? The contributions to this topical collection are intended to reinvigorate the debate about the theory and practical use of futures in advancing the interests of various stakeholders and/or to suggest concrete ways to make theoretical advances for empirical research. Aims and Scope

The journal focuses on the most substantial challenges European countries are facing today in terms of society, politics, economy, education, science and technology, and on the contributions that the European region can make to solving global challenges. The journal seeks to foster thorough analysis of key European policies, such as those for research and education, and addresses topics concerning the future of the European Union in its wider transnational and global contexts.

Topics addressed in the journal are not limited to the development of the EU: European regions “share” common experiences, divisions and conflicts – which altogether build a rich resource for critical examination as well as forward-looking renewal. Articles that raise questions about European futures more generally are welcome, as well as subject-based and interdisciplinary studies, ranging from the social sciences and humanities to the natural sciences and engineering.

Besides its empirical focus the journal promotes discussions about European traditions and perspectives in futures research. In addition, the journal seeks to advance the theoretical and methodological underpinnings of futures studies.

Article Collection: Energizing Futures – Sustainable Development and Energy in Transition

What are the main challenges of sustainable energy futures in an era of increasing uncertainty? How to create sustainable energy policies in Europe, and elsewhere in the world? What is the role of futures studies in identifying opportunities for a fair, efficient and resilient energy system? To understand both challenges and opportunities, this new collection offers a multidisciplinary, multi-level and time-variant analysis of these issues. Article Collection: Futures of a complex world

Our world is increasingly riddled with complexity, more so than at any other time in history. For instance, the continuous growth of cities requires more infrastructure, more transport, more mobility. Or take a look at the EU, which has become an ever more complicated arrangement between European countries, balancing between centralised policies and national sovereignty. Our world's complexity is constantly growing. This collection focuses on central challenges in a world of uncertain developments and the need for sustainable futures, as well as critical examination of futures research and its contributions.
