Biology and Fertility of Soils publishes in English original papers, reviews and short communications on all fundamental and applied aspects of biology – microflora and microfauna - and fertility of soils. It offers a forum for research aimed at broadening the understanding of biological functions, processes and interactions in soils, particularly concerning the increasing demands of agriculture, deforestation and industrialization. The journal includes articles on techniques and methods that evaluate processes, biogeochemical interactions and ecological stresses, and sometimes presents special issues on relevant topics.

The Founding Editor is Johannes C. G. Ottow; the Editor-in-Chief is Paolo Nannipieri, Dipartimento Scienza del Suolo
e Nutrizione della Pianta, Università di Firenze, Italy.

Why publish with us

  • Ranked in the top quartile of Soil Science journals worldwide, we publish high quality research, reviews, and position and opinion papers.
  • We focus on fundamental and applied aspects of microflora, microfauna, and the fertility (productivity) of soils, and welcome Position and Opinion papers.
  • We cover techniques and methods that evaluate processes, biogeochemical interactions and ecological stresses; and present special issues based on relevant topics and related meetings.

  • Recommended content to read before submission

Biology and Fertility of Soils recommends reading content selected by the Editor in Chief to help you to prepare your manuscript before submission to the journal.

  • Call for Papers: Special Issue on “Recent advances in biology and fertility studies of paddy field soil”

This special issue invites the latest studies in a variety of aspects related to biology and fertility of paddy field soil: nutrient cycles, decomposition of organic matter, production/consumption of greenhouse gases, interactions between microbes or between microbes and rice plants, etc. Original research articles together with reviews and position/opinion papers are welcome.
    Submission Deadline: November 30, 2022 | Expected 2023

  • Call for papers: Special Issue on “Microbial control of soil organic matter dynamics: effects of land use and climate change”

This special issue aims to bring together high quality original research, reviews, and short communication highlighting land use and climate change impacts on microbial control of SOM formation, transformation, and sequestration in agro-ecosystems. Potential topics include, but not limited to: (i) Soil management (e.g., tillage, fertilizer, cover cropping, etc.) and land use changes (e.g., conversation of pasture to crop land and vise-versa) impact on microbes mediated SOM dynamics, (ii) effects of elevated CO2, temperature, O3, and extreme weather events (e.g., drought and flooding) on microbes mediated SOM dynamics in agro-ecosystems, (iii) microbial modulation of soil organic carbon transformation and stability, (iv) microbial processes and components interacting with SOM and soil minerals, and (v) microbial necromass in soil and its response to disturbance or changing environmental conditions.
    Submission Deadline: July 31, 2022 | Expected 2022

  • Call for papers: Special Issue on “Ecology of active microbiomes related to soil processes, functions and fertility and its links with plant health, growth, and productivity”

This special issue focus on the ecology of active microbiome related to soil processes, functions and fertility. The studies that provide the links among (i) active microbiome, (ii) soil processes, functions and fertility and (iii) plant health, growth, and productivity will be given the highest priority.
    Submission Deadline: July 31, 2022 | Expected 2022
