Biology and Fertility of Soils - Call for Papers Special Issue on “Tracing denitrification in terrestrial ecosystems”

Biology and Fertility of Soils is seeking submissions for a Special Issue on “Tracing denitrification in terrestrial ecosystems”.

Lead Guest Editor: Christoph Müller
Guest Editors: Tim Clough, Michael Dannenmann, Marcus Horn, Olaf Ippisch, Robert Mikutta, Nicole Wrage-Mönnig, Steffen Schlüter

Although denitrification has been intensively studied for a long time and many recent advances have been made in methods, techniques, analytical tools, quantification, and computational power, we still lack a comprehensive understanding of denitrification and its emissions of gaseous nitrogen (N) compounds in terrestrial soils.

Soil N transformation pathways and processes of gaseous N losses are influenced by a variety of controlling factors acting at various scales. However, the high heterogeneity and variability of soils and boundary conditions, even at small scales (µm), still make it challenging to predict and model denitrification satisfactorily.

This special issue will present new insights in denitrification research at different scales, using advanced experimental techniques with high spatial and temporal resolution as well as advanced modeling approaches. High-resolution simulation at the pore scale and improved ecosystem modeling results are as welcome as are laboratory and field studies, e.g., on the effect of plants, organic matter quality and distribution, microbial communities, hot spots, and soil microsite structure on N transformation pathways and nitrous oxide and dinitrogen fluxes. We encourage researchers working on these topics to submit their regular papers, as well as opinion and review papers for this special issue.
