Call for papers Special Issue: Fate and consequences of groundwater contamination
Groundwater is the major source of fresh water for the global community, as about 42%, 36% and 27% of water usage for irrigation, household use and manufacturing are met with groundwater resources, respectively. Around one third of the global population depends on groundwater for drinking water. A supply of safe groundwater for drinking is one of the crucial aspects of sustainable development of a nation. Urbanization, agricultural practices, industrial activities and climate change all pose serious threats to the quality of groundwater resources. Toxic metals, hydrocarbons, trace organic contaminants, pesticides, nanoparticles, microplastics and other emerging contaminants are contaminating groundwater at increasing levels.
The aim of this special issue on “Fate and consequences of groundwater contamination” is to identify the sources of contaminants in groundwater, to understand the mechanisms of transport of these contaminants, and to assess the adverse effects on biotic and abiotic components of the environment. Recent advances in analytical techniques to trace contaminants and their origin, risk assessment approaches and mitigation measures to address adverse effects are also the focus of this special volume. Solution-based case studies describing the detection, control and impacts of natural and anthropogenic groundwater contamination will also be welcome additions to this volume. We also encourage submissions related to methods for evaluating the effects of climate change on groundwater contamination.
The special volume will focus on the following major themes:
Latest analytical methods for detecting and tracking the movement of groundwater contaminants. Novel techniques for assessing risks to human populations consuming contaminated groundwater.The consequences of groundwater contamination in the biotic environment, including effects on microbial populations, plants and animals. Effects of groundwater contamination on the abiotic environment, such as soil, sediments and surface water. Case studies and remedial actions to control groundwater contamination from natural (e.g. geogenic) and anthropogenic sources.
Therefore, we kindly invite you to contribute a manuscript to a special issue of the Archives of Environmental Contamination and Toxicology entitled “Fate and consequences of groundwater contamination”.
