Mathematical Methods of Operations Research - Call for Papers: Special Issue on Mixed-Integer Multi-Agent Optimization

Special Issue Editors: Margarida Carvalho, Tobias Harks, Simone Sagratella, Martin Schmidt

Submission Deadline: February 29, 2024

Completion: November 30, 2024

Many real-world applications require to model the interaction of multiple self-interested decision makers, whose decisions may depend on each other. These non-cooperative multi-agent frameworks can either be modeled as simultaneous or hierarchical games, leading to (generalized) Nash equilibrium or bilevel problems – or even combinations of the two. While classic theory and algorithms for these classes of problems mainly deal with convex games with continuous variables, many applications make it necessary to consider mixed-integer quantities, which are very challenging to tackle both from a theoretical and a numerical perspective. The aim of this special issue is to extend and broaden both the theory and algorithms for multi-agent optimization problems with mixed-integer variables. Preference will be given to high-quality contributions with a special emphasis on exact methods.

Topics of Interest

Of great interest for this special issue are topics around mixed-integer (generalized) Nash equilibrium models, mixed-integer bilevel or hierarchical problems, mixed-integer variational inequalities, or combinations thereof. Contributions proposing methods for nonconvex programs that encompass as special cases any of these mixed-integer multi-agent problems are welcome if such a relationship is explicitly discussed. Subject areas include but are not limited to:

  • theory of mixed-integer games (simultaneous or hierarchical) such as existence or uniqueness theory as well as complexity theory;
  • computational methods for the mentioned problems, preferably exact methods or approximation methods with quality theory;
  • challenging and innovative applications.

Submission

Please submit manuscripts through the Springer online system (if you are a new author to the system you will be required to create a system login) https://www.editorialmanager.com/mmor (this opens in a new tab) and, when asked to "Choose Article Type", select "S.I.: Mixed-Integer Multi-Agent Optimization".

Submission of a manuscript implies (i) that the work described has not been published before, (ii) that it is not under consideration for publication anywhere else, and (iii) that its publication has been approved by all co-authors, if any, as well as by the responsible authorities – tacitly or explicitly – at the institute where the work has been carried out. The publisher will not be held legally responsible should there be any claims for compensation.

The journal imposes no hard limits on the paper length as long as what authors write is important. A paper length of about 20 pages in journal format is appreciated. Submissions that exceed 40 pages in journal format (including illustrations and references) should however be accompanied by a short justification as to why a briefer discussion is not possible. Full author instructions may be found at http://www.springer.com/186 (this opens in a new tab)/submission-guidelines.
