Novel natural and engineered enzymes: Technology and Applications

Scope:

Enzymes are able to catalyze reactions with remarkable chemo-, regio-, and enantioselectivity under mild conditions and are generally preferred over chemical-based catalysts for applications in the cosmetics, food, detergents, textiles, fine chemicals, biofuels, pharmaceutical and a number of other industries  However, current limitations associated with the high cost of substrates in enzyme production, low yields, poor stability, low enzyme activity, high downstream processing costs and the lack of enzymes with new properties have limited their potential wide use in industries. Recent advances in molecular biology techniques such as genomics, metagenomics, directed evolution, CRISPER/Cas9 system, protein engineering and bioinformatics, together with the wide availability of cloud computing prowess has brought a revolution in the search and engineering of novel enzyme systems that would posses improved specificity and efficient catalytic activities with the ability to act over a broad range of temperature, pH and substrates  will assist in developing new enzyme-based industrial applications. Thus, this special issue entitled “Novel natural and engineered enzymes: Technology and Applications” will highlight recent advances the use of techniques to develop enzymes for industrial applications . We are especially interested in high-quality critical reviews and research articles in, but not limited to, the following areas:

  • Metagenomics and mining of novel enzymes
  • High throughput biology and directed evolution approaches for developing enzyme systems
  • Applications of CRISPER/Cas9 in enzyme engineering
  • Artificial and synthetic enzymes
  • Moonlighting and promiscuous enzymes
  • Extremozymes
  • Advances in enzyme immobilization e.g.with nanocarriers
  • Fermentation and downstream processing of enzymes
  • Advances in expression system, transcription, and translation control for enzyme production

Publication of articles:

3 Biotech publishes manuscripts under Continuous Article Publishing (CAP) in which accepted papers are published online with volume and article numbers shortly after receipt of authors proofs. CAP aims to speed up the process from acceptance to final publication of articles without the need for articles to be placed in a waiting queue. This will ensure that all articles in 3 Biotech are immediately available to readers and researchers and in the indexing and abstracting databases.

Instruction for authors:

Follow these guidelines  (this opens in a new tab)to prepare your manuscript.

During the submission process, the special issue “Novel natural and engineered enzymes: Technology and Applications” is available in the drop down under “Additional Information”.
