Organic Agriculture - Call for Papers: Special Issue - “Innovative sustainable organic food packaging”

Guest editors: Prof. Luigi Cembalo, Dr. Massimiliano Borrello, Dr. Alessia Lombardi.

This Special Issue welcomes reviews, research papers, and technical notes that examine advances and applications of innovative sustainable solutions related to organic food packaging. Guest editors: Luigi Cembalo, Alessia Lombardi, Massimiliano Borrello. Submissions close on June 30, 2023.

Organic Agriculture is seeking submissions for a Special Issue on innovative sustainable organic food packaging to improve sustainability in the organic sector. All manuscripts will be peer-reviewed by 2-3 independent reviewers and handled by the Guest Editors, in collaboration with the Journal’s Editor-in-Chief. Papers accepted for publication in the Special Issue will be available online soon after acceptance, and before inclusion in the Special Issue.

Background
Organic agriculture is a sustainable production system that has gained, in recent decades, massive implementation at global level. Due to its role in reducing the environmental impact in agri-food supply chains, and thanks to its market appreciation, organic agriculture represents an ideal arena for experimenting the adoption of sustainable innovations. Among the numerous challenges, organic supply chain is called to face the limits of distribution technologies that are often responsible of food waste and plastic waste. Sustainable solutions come from innovative sustainable business models, from circular model design and transition pathways, from new model of consumption, as well as from the bio-plastics. As for the latter, bio-plastics may face at least two main concerns, namely 1. Improving (primary and secondary) shelf-life of fresh products, and 2. Reducing the use of fossil-origin plastic.

Aims and scope of this Special Issue
This special issue proposal is meant to collect original papers on all types of sustainable innovation in organic food packaging. Papers are solicited on all areas related to these topics, including but not limited to the following:

Design, optimized for the organic sector, of bio-plastic film systems to provide improved barrier properties aimed at producing bio-plastic packagingDevelopment of active and intelligent packaging materials that can regulate the modified atmosphere Development of compostable packaging systems, based on renewable raw materialsOptimization of bio-plastic systems in terms of design and cost-effectivenessEconomic evaluation of innovation adoption costsAssessment of consumer willingness to accept sustainable innovation with respective to organic food packagingPolicy and regulation need to enhance the planning and organization of a closed-loop system for compostable packaging, and communication systems (e.g labeling)Multi-actor analysis for the acceptance of innovation throughout the supply chain with special reference to consumersSustainable business model innovationGovernance and organization studies of the organic supply chains, also implementing the blockchain

Studies should have the organic sector as main focus or included in circular model designs, as well as in ecological transition pathways.
