Physiology and Molecular Biology of Plants - Invitation for Contribution to Special Issue "Cellular Signals and Molecular Physiology of Plant Responses”

Guest Editors: Neeti Sanan Mishra and Renu Deswal

Plants constantly perceive and respond to diverse environmental stimuli such as light, temperature, water and nutrients. The interactions with these environmental cues shape their growth and fate. The plant responses are entangled with challenges posed by extreme fluctuations in the surrounding environment and defense against a variety of pests and pathogens, which have a detrimental effect on plant performance and yields.

We still have to go a long way to elucidate and decipher the cellular mechanisms by which plants perceive the individual and combined environmental cues and relay the messages through the molecular networks to regulate their genetic machinery for growth and survival. The understanding of the plant responses may provide the physiological, biochemical, molecular, genetic, genomic or phenotypic tools or resources required for acquiring resilience to abiotic stresses and resistance to biotic stresses. These will help to design effective strategies for the development of climate smart food crops to meet the food and feed requirements of the future generations.

This Special Issue aims to collect impactful research articles providing evidence and insights on plant responses to favourable and stressful environmental stimuli. Methodological papers describing new technologies for plant phenotyping or evaluating plant responses and reviews providing a comprehensive update or view of this topic are also welcome.

This Special Issue is a sequel to the institution of “Prof. S.K. Sopory Endowment awards” on the occasion of his 75th birthday held at the ICGEB, New Delhi on 07th January 2023. Prof Sudhir K Sopory is an eminent plant biologist who has contributed significantly in the areas of Plant Physiology and Plant Molecular Biology.
