Description
Metamaterials are engineered structures with unusual combinations of properties. These unusual properties are benefiting sporting goods, allowing safer helmets, improving tennis rackets, and tuning the response of running shoes. In turn, sporting goods have been an excellent platform to develop manufacturing and supply chains for metamaterials. Many of the products featuring metamaterials focus on auxetics – a form of mechanical metamaterial. Metamaterials research spans various domains, and in this collection, we hope to promote the application of more metamaterials in sports.

You are invited to submit research articles, technical notes, or reviews. All papers must fit the Aims and Scope (this opens in a new tab) of the journal. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • Mechanical metamaterials - new developments and applications
  • Active metamaterials - adapting to external stimuli
  • Acoustic metamaterials and metasurfaces - tuning the sound of a club, racket or bat striking a ball
  • Augmented reality – photonic metasurfaces for heads on displays (for training and spectators)
  • Electromagnetic metamaterials for biosensors

Submission guidelines
All papers must be prepared in accordance with the Instructions for Authors at: https://www.springer.com/journal/12283/submission-guidelines (this opens in a new tab). Authors should submit through the online submission site (this opens in a new tab) and select article type “TC - "Metamaterials in Sport".

Please indicate your intention to submit a paper to this Topical Collection with an email to the Guest Editors. Please include a tentative title and indicate the type of paper (original research, review, technical note).

Submitted papers should present original, unpublished work, relevant to one of the topics of the Topical Collection. All submitted papers will be evaluated on the basis of relevance, significance of contribution, technical quality, scholarship, and quality of presentation, by at least two independent reviewers. It is the policy of the journal that no submission, or substantially overlapping submission, be published or be under review at another journal or conference at any time during the review process. Final decisions on all papers are made by the Editor-in-Chief.

Authors are encouraged to read the recent editorial “How to write a manuscript for Sports Engineering (this opens in a new tab)”.

UK MetaMaterials Network

The Topical Collection is in collaboration with the UK Metamaterials Network. (this opens in a new tab) To help exchange knowledge between sporting goods brands, governing bodies, consumers, athletes and teams and the metamaterials community, UK authors of papers accepted before February 2024 will have the opportunity to apply for network support to create summary videos, including for the Sports Engineering journal – YouTube Channel (this opens in a new tab).

The Topical Collection is linked to the network’s summer school (to be held in 2023). We will also hold knowledge exchange events to help authors reach sporting goods brands, and governing bodies.
