Building Simulation - Call for Papers: Special Issue on Energy Flexibility and Renewable Energy Utilization of Urban Energy Systems

Dear Colleagues,

As cities strive to reduce their carbon emission and transition towards a more sustainable energy future, the integration of renewable energy sources has emerged as a key priority. Due to the intermittence and variability of renewable energy, there is an urgent need to balance energy supply and demand. By enhancing energy flexibility, urban energy systems can better adapt to fluctuations in supply and demand in real time, thereby improving reliability, resilience, and overall system efficiency. This includes the deployment of advanced technologies such as energy storage systems, demand-side management strategies, and smart grid solutions.

This special issue aims to collect cutting-edge research exploring innovative strategies, technologies, and policies to enhance energy flexibility and promote the effective integration of renewable energy sources in building and urban energy systems. Potential topics for this special issue include, but will not be limited to:

  • Demand-side management technologies for smart grid
  • Load flexibility of buildings at the community level
  • Large-scale thermal and electricity energy storage system
  • Building Integrated Photovoltaic (BIPV) for buildings/district
  • Innovated building technologies to support energy flexibility
  • Adoption of phase change materials for energy flexibility
  • Advanced HVAC equipment/systems integrated with renewable energy and energy storage system
  • Urban building energy modeling to quantify energy flexibility and renewable energy potential

The peer review process of the submissions for this special issue is the same as the rigorous peer review process of the journal in general. Additionally, if the guest editor(s) authors an article in the special issue, they will not handle the peer review process. Upon its acceptance, the paper will go into production immediately. It will be published in the latest regular issue and presented on the specific Topical Collection webpage simultaneously. In regular issues, Topical Collection articles will be clearly marked.

We sincerely invite you to submit your original work to this special issue and are looking forward to sharing your outstanding research outcomes with peers around the world.

Paper submission: When preparing your manuscript, please follow the Instructions for Authors of Building Simulation, which can be downloaded from the journal website (https://www.springer.com/journal/12273 (this opens in a new tab)).
