Folia Geobotanica - Belowground plant organs and their functional ecology

Guest Editor

Jitka Klimešová, Department of Functional Ecology, Institute of Botany of the Czech Academy of Sciences, Průhonice, Czech Republic and Department of Botany, Faculty of Sciences, Charles University, Prague, Czech Republic

Themes & Objective

Research into, and the understanding of, belowground plant organs lags behind that of leaves, stems, flowers and other usually aboveground parts; therefore, this special issue will be focused on roots, rhizomes, tubers and bulbs, and their functional ecology with contributions from different biomes and covering a broad range of topics.

The focus on belowground organs that are important for biomass production, species co-existence, tolerance to disturbance and carbon sequestration, especially in understudied open ecosystems where investments to belowground organs exceed investments into aboveground organs, support United Nation Sustainable Development Goal 15: Life on Land (this opens in a new tab).

EXPECTED PUBLICATION: Winter 2023
(Accepted articles will be made available Online First (this opens in a new tab) on an ongoing basis.)

About the Guest Editor

Prof. Jitka Klimešová
(@Jitka_Klimesova (this opens in a new tab)) is an ecologist and former co-Editor-in-Chief of Folia Geobotanica (Springer) whose main interest is the functional morphology of plants. Together with colleagues, she is building a database of clonal growth in plants (this opens in a new tab) and bud bank traits for flora of Central Europe; testing functionality of morphological traits in experiments; and doing correlative studies and evolutionary analyses of different plant traits and environmental parameters for the whole flora.
