Microgravity Science and Technology - Microgravity Experiments on Board the SJ-10 Recoverable Satellite

On April 6th, 2016, China launched its 24th recoverable satellite, the SJ-10 Recoverable Microgravity Experimental Satellite, for the sole purpose of experimenting in microgravity physics and space biology. Now, in 2019, under the guidance of Prof. Wenrui Hu, the Chief Scientist of SJ-10 satellite mission, two books summarizing the results have been published jointly by Science Press and Springer.

They are: Physical Science under Microgravity: Experiments on Board the SJ-10 Recoverable Satellite (this opens in a new tab) (Eds Wenrui Hu and Qi Kang, ISBN 978-981-13-1339-4), and Life Science in Space: Experiments on Board the SJ-10 Recoverable Satellite (this opens in a new tab) (Eds Enkui Duan and Mian Long, ISBN 978-981-13-6324-5). The first book contains the results of the experiments pertaining to fluid physics, combustion, and materials science. The second book consists of the results of experiments on radiation biology, gravitational biology, biological technology, and facility studies.

These books include the following features:

  • More than ten projects each pertaining to the space experiments performed in the fields of microgravity and life sciences aboard the SJ-10 Satellite.
  • Topics in fluid physics, combustion, materials science, radiation biology, gravitational biology, and biotechnology.
  • An introduction to recoverable satellite, microgravity-level control and analysis, and facilities and techniques for microgravity and life science experiments in space.

The experiments performed and described were selected from more than 200 proposals from various institutions across the world, and have never been conducted before in their respective fields. They involve the aforementioned topics and primarily investigate the kinetic properties of matter and the rhythm of life in a microgravity environment. The two books provide a comprehensive review of these experiments, as well as information on the project’s execution, data collection, and scientific outcomes.

For further information on this topic, a paper ‘Space program SJ-10 of microgravity research (this opens in a new tab)’  by Prof. Wenrui Hu and his colleagues, was published in Microgravity Science and Technology, volume 26, issue 3, pp. 159 – 169 in 2014, which provided an overall view of SJ-10 satellite mission (Microgravity Sci. Tech., 2014, 26: 159-169).; In May 2016, a Topical Issue ‘Ground-based researches related to microgravity science experiments aboard SJ-10’ (this opens in a new tab) (Guest Eds, Jian-Fu Zhao and Qi Kang, volume 28, Issue 2) was also published in the journal, which included 12 articles containing results from ground-based studies related to the SJ-10 satellite mission.
