Call for Papers: Social Impacts of Geological Hazards and Preventive Measures

Geological hazards pose a major threat to the living and create a huge social impact. The modern era still experiences a rise in the frequency of geological hazards despite the technological advancements. People and communities exposed to higher physical and social vulnerability are more prone to geological hazards whereas the effects after hazard occurrence are based on the response of the environment and communities towards it. However, it certainly is a challenge to identify difference in vulnerability within communities. Psychological and cognitive effects like lack of confidence and insecurity have also been observed in impacted people due to the hazards, which is another major concern. Moreover, the two important terms for any geological hazards are response and recovery. Researches explain that social vulnerability differs across communities and also within communities. Catastrophic natural and manmade geological hazards can occur through land, coastal regions and produce scathed or unscathed impacts within surrounding regions. The social impact also includes damage of cultivation and livelihood, which leads to evacuation of regions by local people. This, in turn could affect the economy leading to economic crisis.
Emergency preparedness and hazard mitigation are two main practices to reduce social and physical impacts of geological hazards. Emergency response and disaster recovery are other dimensions of social impacts. Also, Hazard Vulnerability Analysis for communities is currently done in order to understand the intensity of the vulnerability as a preventive measure. With technological advancements, risk management for disasters and hazards have improvised at a great level. One of the recent advancement to minimise social impact by geological hazards are the incorporation of highly efficient analysing tools for risk analysis like big data. Further, the advancements include understanding vulnerability of past hazard effects, assimilating technologies like IoT in hazard management, running TTF (Task technology Fit) for choosing applicable technologies in hazard management, Artificial Intelligence in hazard management for emergency situations, usage of drones and robots for understanding unapproachable damages done by hazards and many more under the pilot stage. Despite the advanced technologies incorporated in disaster management, cost effectiveness, enormous data management and legal ramifications pose a challenge and limitation.
Believing this is the right time in putting forward research works on social impact of geological hazards and its preventive measures, this special issue aims to bring together and reconnoiter recent advancement and futuristic opportunities for growth in the field of geological hazards.

Dr. Marimuthu Karuppiah is currently working as an Associate Professor in the SRM Institute of Science & Technology, Chennai. Prior he was working as Associate Professor, Department of Computer Science, VIT University, Vellore, India. He held academic position of Senior lecturer in Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Syed Ammal Engineering College, Ramanathapuram, India from March 2005 to November 2008. He received his Ph.D. degree in Computer Science and Engineering from VIT University, Vellore, on August 2015 [July 2009 - August 2015]. He completed ME in Computer Science and Engineering from Anna University, Chennai, in the year 2005. He also received BE degree in Computer Science and Engineering from the Madurai Kamaraj University, Madurai, India, in 2003. His current research interests include cryptography, wireless sensor network security, mobile ad hoc network security, vehicular ad hoc network security, remote user authentication using smart cards. He has authored over 50 papers in reputed international and conferences. He is a life member of Cryptology Research Society of India (CRSI) and Computer Society of India (CSI). He is also a professional member of IEEE and Association for Computing Machinery (ACM).

Dr. Shehzad Ashraf Chaudhry received the master’s and Ph.D. degrees (Hons.) from the International Islamic University Islamabad, Pakistan, in 2009 and 2016, respectively. He is currently working as an Associate Professor with the Department of Computer Engineering, Faculty of Engineering and Architecture, Istanbul Gelisim University, İstanbul, Turkey. He has authored over 100 scientific publications appeared in different international journals and proceedings, including more than 73 in SCIE journals. With an H-index of 23 and an I-10 index 48, his work has been cited over 1750 times. He has also supervised over 35 graduate students in their research. His current research interests include lightweight cryptography, elliptic/hyper elliptic curve cryptography, multimedia security, E-payment systems, MANETs, SIP authentication, smart grid security, IP multimedia subsystem, and next generation networks. He occasionally writes on issues of higher education in Pakistan. He has served as a TPC member of various international conferences. He is an Active Reviewer of many ISI indexed journals. He was a recipient of the Gold Medal for achieving 4.0/4.0 CGPA in his Masters. Considering his research, Pakistan Council for Science and Technology granted him the Prestigious Research Productivity Award, while affirming him among Top Productive Computer Scientist in Pakistan.

Dr. Mohammed H. Alsharif received the B.Eng. degree in electrical engineering (wireless communication and networking) from the Islamic University of Gaza, Palestine, in 2008, and the M.Sc. Eng. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering (wireless communication and networking) from the National University of Malaysia, Malaysia, in 2012 and 2015, respectively. He joined Sejong University, South Korea, in 2016, where he is currently an Assistant Professor with the Department of Electrical Engineering. His current research interests include wireless communications and networks, including wireless communications, network information theory, the Internet of Things (IoT), green communication, energy-efficient wireless transmission techniques, wireless power transfer, and wireless energy harvesting.
