Submission Status: Open   |   Submission deadline: 1 September 2024

Summary and scope
This Special Issue aims to collect contributions focused on emphasizing how the development and application of modern technologies can represent a boost for improving remanufacturing operations, moving towards the design of smart remanufacturing environments.

The Special Issue includes, but is not limited to, the following topics:

  • New methods for improving the Design for Remanufacturing (DfR)
  • Human-Robot Interaction for improving Remanufacturing operations
  • The role of simulation to reduce remanufacturing uncertainties
  • Additive Manufacturing for restoring the quality of products
  • The use of cloud based technologies for distributed remanufacturing environments
  • The Digital Twin as enabler of optimized remanufacturing operations
  • Advanced systems for quality assessment, operations management and optimization, disassembly and reverse logistics.

Submission guidelines
All papers must be prepared in accordance with the Instructions for Authors (this opens in a new tab). Authors should submit through the online submission site (this opens in a new tab) and select article type “SI - Technology Advancements towards the Design of Smart Remanufacturing Systems".

Submitted papers should present original, unpublished work, relevant to one of the topics of the Special Issue. All submitted papers will be evaluated on the basis of relevance, significance of contribution, technical quality, scholarship, and quality of presentation, by at least two independent reviewers. It is the policy of the journal that no submission, or substantially overlapping submission, be published or be under review at another journal or conference at any time during the review process. Final decisions on all papers are made by the Editor-in-Chief.

About the Guest Editors:

Mario Caterino is an Assistant Professor at the University of Salerno. He is a lecturer of several courses for undergraduates and postgraduates at the Department of Engineering of the University of Salerno. He is currently active in the field of remanufacturing, researching the use of cloud technologies for remanufacturing applications, the use of Additive Manufacturing as a candidate to improve remanufacturing processes and the evaluation of human factors in human-robot interaction contexts for remanufacturing.

Marcello Fera is an Associate Professor of Industrial Systems Engineering and Operations Management at the University of Campania "Luigi Vanvitelli". In 2004, he obtained a Master's Degree with honors in Management Engineering from the University of Naples “Federico II”, after which he obtained his PhD in Mechanical Systems Engineering from the same University in 2008 with a thesis on obsolescence management for spare parts management. He is responsible for research projects, also for automotive OEM, in the field of operations management and digital twins use to improve operations management and control, and for the industrial process analysis for software implementation companies.

Roberto Macchiaroli is a Professor at the University of Campania "Luigi Vanvitelli". He obtained his Bachelor's degree in Electronic Engineering with honors from the University of Naples Federico II in 1989, and his Ph.D. in Electronic and Information Engineering. His research topics are: Industrial Manufacturing Systems Design and Management, Operations and Project Management, Safety and Health at Work, Supply Chain Management.

Pasquale Manco is a Research Fellow at the Department of Engineering at the University of Campania “Luigi Vanvitelli”. He obtained his Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering from the same university. Currently, he conducts research in the field of operations sustainability, remanufacturing and product life cycle modelling.

Marta Rinaldi is an Assistant Professor and researcher in the Department of Engineering at the University of Campania “Luigi Vanvitelli”. She obtained her Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering from the University of Parma, Italy. Currently, she teaches and conducts research in the field of supply chain mapping, modeling and simulation, sustainable design and management of production systems, human-centric design and human-robot interaction.
