Summary and scope
Manufacturing is a critical industry that has undergone significant changes due to technological advances. Digital transformation in the manufacturing industry is necessary to compete in an evolving landscape. Intelligent automation and digital twin are two emerging technologies that have the potential to transform manufacturing operations by improving efficiency, reducing costs, and enhancing quality. The forward-thinkers are already taking steps to become more agile and resilient while accelerating innovation, managing increased complexity, and evolving manufacturing facilities to meet all sustainability and regulatory targets faster than the competition.

With a digital twin of manufacturing, globalized manufacturers can quickly replicate production anywhere. A comprehensive digital twin of the complete manufacturing process and a digital data backbone that runs through the ecosystem will facilitate flexibility and agility.

This Special Issue provides a platform for researchers and practitioners to identify key challenges and opportunities related to implementing these technologies. It could also highlight best practices, case studies, and success stories that illustrate how intelligent automation and digital twin can be leveraged to drive innovation and growth in the manufacturing sector.

Potential topics include but are not limited to:

  • Digital twin modelling method for manufacturing processes
  • Intelligent manufacturing production line system based on digital twin
  • Digital twins for intelligent manufacturing based on cloud manufacturing services
  • Modeling and automated deployment of digital twins for manufacturing systems
  • Advanced controllers for digital twin communication and smart manufacturing
  • Internet of things framework of digital twin for optimized manufacturing control
  • Digital twin for verification and validation of industrial automation systems

Submission guidelines
All papers must be prepared in accordance with the Instructions for Authors (this opens in a new tab). Authors should submit through the online submission site (this opens in a new tab) and select article type “SI - Intelligent Automation and Digital Twin for Manufacturing".

Submitted papers should present original, unpublished work, relevant to one of the topics of the Special Issue. All submitted papers will be evaluated on the basis of relevance, significance of contribution, technical quality, scholarship, and quality of presentation, by at least two independent reviewers. It is the policy of the journal that no submission, or substantially overlapping submission, be published or be under review at another journal or conference at any time during the review process. Final decisions on all papers are made by the Editor-in-Chief.
