Summary and scope
Strong, long-lasting, lightweight materials are in high demand for structural applications to meet industry requirements. By lowering structural weight and energy consumption, these high-performance materials also help to increase energy efficiency by sinking CO2 emissions from various industries and systems. Functionally graded materials, fibre-reinforced composites, and shape-memory alloys are a few examples of such high-performance materials. The automotive, aerospace, defence, and healthcare industries are seeing an increase in demand for these materials. The development of such advanced high-performance materials and structures with superior structural, thermo-electro-mechanical, and functional features is made possible by advancements in processing and manufacturing technologies and their effective performance evaluation.

The primary aim of this Special Issue is to bring together papers that communicate significant and innovative technological developments in advanced processing and manufacturing techniques. The research articles range from microstructural design to metamaterial design, topology optimization to generative design, and additive to hybrid manufacturing technology in both experimental and computational frameworks will be considered. We believe that the contents of this special issue will continue to encourage new advances in engineering material design.

Few special points on the novelty of the Special Issue are:

  • Focused more on the interdisciplinary research
  • Covers several demanding aspects from the scope of the Journal
  • CAD/CAE/AM with AI/ML will be specially emphasized
  • Design automation/thinking/AR/VR will also be covered which is very less explored so far.

Submission guidelines
All papers must be prepared in accordance with the Instructions for Authors (this opens in a new tab) . Authors should submit through the online submission site (this opens in a new tab) and select article type “SI -High-Performance Lightweight Materials and Structures: Advanced Processing Techniques and Performance Evaluation".

Submitted papers should present original, unpublished work, relevant to one of the topics of the Special Issue. All submitted papers will be evaluated on the basis of relevance, significance of contribution, technical quality, scholarship, and quality of presentation, by at least two independent reviewers. It is the policy of the journal that no submission, or substantially overlapping submission, be published or be under review at another journal or conference at any time during the review process. Final decisions on all papers are made by the Editor-in-Chief.
