Special Issue on “Decarbonization of Ship Operations”

The need to reduce the trends associated with climate change impose measures to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere and an increase in the efficiency of the use of energy. IMO has been active since 1997 in promoting the implementation of measures that lead to more efficient ship operation with less fuel consumption and less emissions. The measures include improved ship design and improved operational practices. Several indexes have been created to quantify different aspects of these improvements. The shipping industry has been very actively implementing several actions aiming to the decarbonization of ship operation and more need to continue being implemented.

This special issue aims to collect in a single location the contributions that will allow an overview of the present state of the art in this subject area.

Topics of interest include (but not limited to)

  • Hull design for reduced resistance
  • Propeller and appendages design for improved performance
  • Systems to reduce hull resistance
  • Improved technology of ship machinery
  • Alternative fuels for ship propulsion
  • Devices to reduce emissions
  • Weather routing systems
  • Renewable energy devices to assist propulsion
  • Methods of optimization, machine learning and big data analysis

Schedule
It is aimed to have the articles submitted by March 2023 so as to have the special issue published in late 2023.

Submission Guidelines
Submitted articles must not have been previously published or currently submitted for journal publication elsewhere. Paper submissions must conform to the layout and format guidelines of the journal. Submissions must be sent via the journal submission website https://mc03.manuscriptcentral.com/jmsa (this opens in a new tab)

However, before submission it is advisable to contact the Editor to ensure that the paper will be processed as part of the special issue.
