Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering - Call for Papers: Special Issue "Emerging Contaminants: Science and Policy"

Emerging contaminants, including halogenated flame retardants (HFRs), chlorinated paraffins (CPs), per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs), have been widely detected in the environment, and considered as urgent concerns for environmental safety and human health. Compared with traditional pollutants, emerging contaminants are generally not regulated by law-enforcement agencies. Recently, Chinese government has placed significant emphasis on emerging contaminant control and been laying out national-level action plans. Despite the tremendous progress made in this field, the environmental occurrence, sources, and risks of emerging contaminants have not been fully understood and full-scale implementation of the control technologies to meet practical application requirements has not been achieved. To address these knowledge gaps, we propose this special issue and welcome submissions from all over the world. We hope this special issue will inform international scientists, government agencies, and the general public about the current challenges related to emerging contaminants and bridge the gap between science and policy to control their environmental risks.

Typical topics may include, but not limited to,

● New screening and precise analytical methods for multiple emerging contaminants (e.g., HFRs, CPs, PFASs and PPCPs) in environmental matrices;

● Occurrence and source apportionment of emerging contaminants in the environment;

● Prioritization of emerging contaminants in the environment;

● Exposure, bioavailability, and accumulation of emerging contaminants;

● Environmental risk assessment and control strategies of emerging contaminants.
