Journal of Cancer Survivorship - Case Definition of "Cancer Survivor" for All Submissions

There are several definitions of ‘cancer survivor.' While it is not our intention to review all these definitions in this guidance, the Journal of Cancer Survivorship strongly recommends that all new submissions, as of July 1st 2021, provide a specific definition of the patient population included in the submitted work, relative to the time of diagnosis and/or the time from initial treatment. This will provide a more specific bracketing of time used in the paper and provide a more transparent definition of participants included in each study.  Specifically, we are seeking the following information to be included in the methods section:

  • Type of cancer(s)
  • Stage (if applicable)
  • Time since cancer diagnosis and/or treatment (for example, active surveillance, treatment completed with curative intent, treatment completed in remission, ongoing treatment)

The journal preference for research submissions remains those living past exposure to therapy with curative intent. However, research on those living and continuing to experience persistent cancer, recurrence or have received a new diagnosis and continue to receive treatment will be considered, as long as the information above is included.
