Frontiers of Earth Science - Call for Papers "Special Issue on New Advances in Unconventional Resources: Accumulation and Production"

The recovery and utilization of unconventional resources over the last decade-and-a-half, especially shale oil & gas, has developed and continues to play a decisive role in worldwide energy supply and markets. Ongoing and expanding production from unconventional resources, to counter burgeoning demand, has exerted an increasing impact on petroleum prices and global energy structure. This albeit short history of unconventional oil & gas production provides a rich set of ‘lessons learned’, with further progress expected to catalyze the development of new technologies. However, as fossil fuels, unconventional hydrocarbons also face pressure from the expansion and diversification of renewable and alternative energy resources. It is urgent to demonstrate that the unconventional resources can be recovered on a large scale in an economically-viable and environmentally-friendly manner.

This special issue is to showcase new advances related to the evaluation and recovery of unconventional energy resources, illustrating fundamental theories, applied technologies and field practices.  We invite prospective authors to submit original research articles, as well as review articles on various topics, including, but not limited to, unconventional oil & gas, natural gas hydrates and geothermal resources.

Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

  1. Depositional, mineralogical, geochemical and other geological characteristics related to unconventional resources generation, accumulation and storage.
  2. Geophysical, petrophysical and geomechanical advances associated with unconventional resource exploration.
  3. Physical, numerical and analytical modelling of multiphase flow in unconventional oil, gas and energy reservoirs.
  4. Enhanced unconventional resource production trials, including experimental evidence, mechanistic theories and field applications.
  5. New technology and “big” data issues associated with the unconventional resources industry and development efficiencies.
