Call for Papers - Trends, Perspectives and Prospects of Sensor Technologies in Hydrological Sciences - Special Issue

Aims and Scope

Developing new methods and technologies for hydrological applications such as water pollution control, water resources management, infrastructure monitoring and restoration of watershed ecosystems are critical for assuring water security and sustainable development. In water research, biophysiochemical parameters in an aqueous system, such as temperature, flow, microorganisms, hydraulic heads, pH, conductivity, turbidity, sediments, solute concentration, and so on, are extremely important. Traditional aqueous environmental monitoring and modelling methods rely heavily on instant point-in-space measurements, laboratory analysis, and physical and computational infrastructure. However, these methods are not only expensive and time-consuming, but they also fail to timely provide many of the required spatiotemporal features.

The rapid proliferation of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies, underwater sensors and tracking systems, advances in signal processing and information systems aid in the development of sensing technologies as well as software-defined networks, which enable effective water monitoring and modelling. Sensing and control systems capable of effectively monitoring biophysiochemical parameters, as well as detecting concentrations of sediments and solutes are critical for investigating water health and biophysiochemical evolutions, as well as timely implementing prevention and management strategies.

Authors are encouraged to submit both review articles and original research on smart sensing for aqueous environment monitoring and modelling: emerging trends, issues, and challenges. It is encouraged to conduct practical studies describing techniques or information systems for real-time and in-situ monitoring of biophysiochemical parameters in aqueous environment.

  • Advanced signal processing techniques for underwater wireless communications
  • MIMO and diversity systems in underwater communications
  • Real-time data transmission underwater
  • Water quality monitoring from space
  • Drones and satellites in agriculture water management
