Information and Operations Management in Digital Economy

Thanks to the rapid rise of emerging information technologies, the digital economy is playing an increasingly important role in the global economy. To enhance their competitive advantages, more and more firms adopt new information technologies , such as artificial intelligence, blockchain, big data analytics, cloud computing, in their operations. Escalating consumer demand also drives innovations in business operations and supply chain management. It suggests that the digital economy is accelerating the transformation of traditional business models.

New business models and operations innovations generate a significant impact on information management, supply chain operations and consumer behavior. From firms’ perspective, new business models dramatically change the way how firms extract business value and drive customer demand from existing business operations. From consumers’ perspective, emerging technologies help them mitigate uncertainties of product quality or fitness, changing their purchasing behavior. Market and information environment thus become more complex and volatile, creating new trade-offs for firms and consumers in decision-making.

Motivated by the growth of new business models, the significant challenges and abundant opportunities in OM research, we organize this special issue that focuses on how new business models create value for consumers, firms, and supply chain in the digital age, and how to optimize firms’ operations management and business strategies.
