Special Issue on Task planning and motion control problems of service robots in human-centered environments

A practical service in a human centered environment requires well planned tasks which are often represented in abstract manners. For a care-providing robot to execute the tasks, it requires precise and adequate motions of each part of the robot system, which often requires metric data. Furthermore, physical interaction of the robot with the human centric environment or objects in human living space and robust perception of such environments make the problem even harder. Recent advances in robotic systems, manipulation technologies, sensory systems, perception technologies, computing powers, and artificial intelligence provide tangible building-blocks toward human-care service robot technologies. By gathering a wide spectrum of technologies for human care service robots, this issue will establish ISR at the forefront of the next wave of intelligent service robots. The central theme of the Special Issue is task planning and motion control problems of service robots in human centered environments and will capture the surge of interest in the application of AI technologies to task planning and motion control of service robots.

We welcome original, significant and visionary papers describing scientific methods and technologies that steps toward the realization of service robots. The content could also present surveys and reviews that summarize state-of-the-art practices in this arena. Special attention will be paid to papers focusing on task-motion planning, motion control applications to service robots, mobile-manipulator problems for service robots, knowledge modelling for social service robots, dual arm manipulation for service robots, affordance modelling and recognition in everyday life objects, and AI applications for service robots. Submissions of scientific results from experts in academia and industry worldwide will be strongly encouraged.

Guest Editor biographies:

Hyungpil Moon is a Professor of the School of Mechanicalmoon_jist Engineering, Sungkyunkwan University, Korea. He received his B.S. and M.S. in mechanical engineering from POSTECH and his Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. He spent 2 years at the Robotics Institute, Carnegie Mellon University, as a Post-doctoral Fellow. He joined the faculty of the school of mechanical engineering at Sungkyunkwan University in 2008. His research interests include non-prehensile and prehensile robotic manipulation, robotic applications in manufacturing and logistics, SLAM, and soft sensors and actuators. He has published numerous papers in these areas. He served as an associate editor of IEEE ICRA and IEEE/RSJ IROS, IEEE/ASME AIM and IEEE CASE for many years. He served on the program committee of RSS 2011, 2012 and ICIRA 2011. He was a publication chair of URAI 2009, Secretariat of IEEE CASE 2012, Award Chair of RO-MAN 2013, and Finance Chair of URAI 2013. He was an associate editor of Journal of Mechanical Science and Technology for 2011-2014. He was a guest-editor of the special issue on Multi-Scale Manipulation Toward Robotic Manufacturing Technologies for Journal of Intelligent Service Robotics, Springer, in 2015 and a guest-editor of the focused issue on Design and Control of Hydraulic Robots for IEEE/ASME Transactions on Mechatronics, in 2015. He is currently serving as Associate Editor of Intelligent Service Robotics, Editor of IEEE RAS ICRA, co-chair of IEEE RAS TC for Robotic Hands, Grasping and Manipulation and chair of KROS TC for Logistics Robots.  

Byoung-Tak Zhang is POSCO Chair Professor of Computerzhang_jist Science and Engineering and Director of the AI Institute, Seoul National University (SNU), Korea. He has served as President of the Korean Society for Artificial Intelligence (2010-2013) and of the Korean Society for Cognitive Science (2016-2017). He received his PhD (Dr. rer. nat.) in computer science from the University of Bonn, Germany in 1992 and his BS and MS in computer science and engineering from Seoul National University, Korea in 1986 and 1988, respectively. Before joining Seoul National University in 1997, he worked as a Research Fellow at the German National Research Center for Information Technology (GMD, now Fraunhofer Institutes) in Sankt Augustin/Bonn from 1992-1995. He was a Visiting Professor at MIT CSAIL and Brain and Cognitive Sciences Department, Cambridge, MA, from 2003-2004, at Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology (SAIT) from 2007-2008, at BMBF Excellence Centers of Cognitive Technical Systems (CoTeSys, Munich) and Cognitive Interaction Technology (CITEC, Bielefeld) during the Winter of 2010-2011, and at Princeton Neuroscience Institute (PNI) from 2013-2014. He currently serves as Associate Editor of Journal of Cognitive Science, Applied Intelligence, BioSystems, and the IEEE Transactions on Evolutionary Computation (1997-2010). He has received numerous awards and honors, including the Red Stripes Order of Service Merit of the Korean Government, the INAK Award, the Minister of Science and Technology Award, the Okawa Research Grant Award, the Distinguished Service Award from the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society, and the Academic Excellence Award from the Korea Information Science Society.

Changjoo Nam is an Assistant Professor with the Departmentnam_jist of Information and Communication Engineering at Inha University, Incheon, South Korea. He received the B.S. and M.S. degrees in electrical engineering from Korea University, Seoul, South Korea, in 2009 and 2011, respectively, and his Ph.D. degree in computer science from Texas A&M University, College Station, TX, USA, in 2016. From 2018 to 2021, he was a Senior Research Scientist with the Robotics and Media Institute, Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST), Seoul. He worked with the Robotics Institute, Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, PA, USA, as a Postdoctoral Fellow from 2016 to 2018. His research interest includes task and motion planning for multirobot coordination and robotic manipulation. He currently serves as an Associate Editor for the International Journal of Advanced Robotic Systems (since 2019) and served as an Associate Editor for IEEE ICRA’21 and IEEE/RSJ IROS’21.
