GeroScience - Call for Papers

Animal Models for Translational and Preclinical Geroscience Research

Associate Editors Dr. Benjamin Miller, Dr. Rafael de Cabo and Guest Editor Dr. Siobhan Addie and the editorial team of GeroScience (the Journal of the American Aging Association) invite submissions of original research articles, opinion papers/commentaries, and review articles related to animal models for translational and preclinical geroscience research. The geroscience hypothesis posits that intervening in fundamental aging processes can delay the onset and decrease the severity of adult-onset diseases and ameliorate age-related decline in function observed in human populations. There has been a great deal of attention on leveraging geroscience insights from the laboratory to develop anti-aging or ‘geroprotective’ therapies. However, to move potentially effective therapies toward the clinic, we must understand if we currently have the appropriate animal models to effectively translate geroscience findings into safe and effective therapies for humans.

This call-for-papers provides a platform for the presentation of research related to animal models used in basic geroscience-focused research studies across academia, government, and industry settings. We are interested in examining the challenges and opportunities with studying a variety of animal models for translational geroscience research and the development of interventions that target fundamental aging processes.

We encourage submissions that investigate the use of animal models to better understand the aging process and develop interventions to combat age-related diseases. Topics of interest include current efforts in translational geroscience using laboratory mice, rats, domesticated animals, and non-human primates, the application of comparative biology to gain new insights in geroscience, the impact of nutrition and the microbiome in animal research. We are also interested in papers exploring new ways to utilize data from animals that are retired from research, and the exploration of new and alternative models for translational geroscience. Articles that explore the use of animal models to study the genetics, epigenetics, and environmental factors that contribute to aging and age-related diseases are also welcome.

We look forward to receiving your submissions and publishing a Special Issue that advances the field of geroscience through the use of animal models. All manuscripts accepted from this Call for Papers will be included in a unique online article collection to further highlight the importance of this topic.  Please indicate during the submission process by checking the relevant box that the manuscript is submitted in response to this Call for Papers (SI: Animal models for Geroscience). Manuscripts will undergo normal peer review as they are received. Manuscripts will be published online as they are accepted. Articles published from this Call for Papers will be highlighted with a special “Call for Papers” banner on the article PDF, as well as included in the " Animal Models for Translational and Preclinical Geroscience Research” online article collection at time of publication. Submission of cover image ideas is encouraged. The submission of manuscripts in response to this Call for Papers is continuous.
