Dr. Philippe Garrigues is a CNRS Research Director at the University of Bordeaux. He got a degree of Chemical Engineering at the University of Strasbourg. He got then at the University of Bordeaux a degree in Marine Biology/Ecology and a PhD degree in Physical Chemistry/Analytical Chemistry. His research interests are related to the detection of organic pollutants and the environmental fate and the toxicological effects of these compounds. Most of his research works have been developed in collaborations with researchers all over the world (Europe, USA, Japan, China). He has been involved in the development of biochemical markers as early warning systems for the toxicological evaluation of marine ecosystems through the coordination of large research projects (particularly BIOMAR and BEEP projects) supported by the DG Research (European Commission, Brussels). Dr. Garrigues has authored about 180 publications. He is member of the Executive Committee of EuChemS (European Chemical Society). He has been member of the Executive Committee of SETAC-Europe (1997-1999) and Chair of the EuChemS Division «Chemistry and the Environment» (2003-2008). He is/has been member of scientific committtees in French institutions (CNRS, IFREMER, INERIS, Rovaltain Foundation, French Chemical Society). He has organised various International Scientific Conferences dealing with environmental chemistry and toxicology, most of them related to scientific societies (SETAC, ISPAC, PRIMO, EuChemS). He has also various editor’s responsibilities, particularly as Editor in Chief of Environmental Science and Pollution Research (ESPR).

He published more than 300 papers on experimental studies and review articles in many peer-reviewed journals related to Microbiology, Protistology, Medicine, Secondary metabolites, Freshwater and marine ecosystems, Harmful microorganisms, Toxicology, Epidemiology, Neurology. Most of his research works have been developed in collaborations with researchers all over the world (Europe, USA, Asia, Middle East, North Africa). He is Editor and Associate Editor of many journals. He pilots cooperative projects in France and other countries, engaging private sector companies and public sector research centers associated with his Chair. He published many books and chapters and supervised 32 Ph. D. thesis.
Kitae Baek School of Civil/Environmental/Resources and Energy Engineering (Major in Environmental Engineering), Jeonbuk National University, Jeollabukdo, Republic of Korea
Dr. Kitae Baek is a Professor in the Department of Environmental Engineering and Director for Soil Environment Research Center at the Jeonbuk National University where he has been a faculty member since 2012. He completed his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees from Korea Advanced Institute of Technology (KAIST), Republic of Korea. His group has more than 170 peer-reviewed publications. His primary research areas of interest include electrokinetic remediation, soil washing, adsorption of arsenic, geochemistry and fate of arsenic in agricultural land and remediation of mining area including acid mine drainage and mine tailings. He is serving as a member of the Editorial Board and reviewer of numerous journals.
Giovanni Benelli Department of Agriculture, Food and Environment, University of Pisa, Italy
Giovanni Benelli serves as Professor of General and Applied Entomology at the Department of Agriculture, Food and Environment, University of Pisa, Italy. He got an International Ph.D. in Agrarian and Veterinary Sciences at University of Pisa and Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies. Giovanni has worked in several international institutions, including University of Hawaii at Manoa (USA) and University of Jaén (Spain). Giovanni's research focuses on insect behavior, insect-inspired robotics and biological control, covering agricultural pests as well as vectors of medical and veterinary importance. Giovanni serves as Editor for several top-ranked international journals with impact factor. He has cooperated with a wide number of researchers worldwide on various research projects (e.g. H2020 subCULTron, iGUESS-MED). Giovanni has been awarded with various research prizes from international and national organizations, including the Odile Bain Memorial Prize 2018 (Parasites and Vectors & Boehringer Animal Health) and the Antico Fattore Prize 2016 (Accademia dei Georgofili, Firenze).
Dr. Luděk Bláha leads the Environmental Toxicology Programme at RECETOX. He received MSc. in Microbiology and PhD. in Environmental Chemistry at Masaryk University, and previously worked as a researcher at the Institute of Botany of Czech Academy of Science, Veterinary Research Institute Brno CZ, National Water Research Institute Burlington Canada or Michigan State University USA. He is interested in mechanisms of (eco)toxic effects of organic contaminants and natural toxins, and their environmental and health risks. He is an expert in aquatic ecotoxicology, molecular and in vitro toxicology, and biomarkers of effects. Dr. Bláha coordinated several grants, cooperates with several universities in Europe, North America, Japan, or Australia. He also collaborates on applied projects with industry (ASIO, Polymateria UK), and contributes by other initiatives having the impact on community (EC JRC, NORMAN, CYANOCOST, European Medicines Agency EMA, SETAC Europe, OECD EAGMST). He serves as the reviewer for international journals or grant agencies in CZ, Norway, Switzerland, Hungary, or Poland. Dr. Bláha supervised more than 25 PhD students and postdocs with whom he authored over 140 peer-reviewed papers or book chapters.

Angeles Blanco graduated in 1990 in Industrial Chemistry at the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM) and received her PhD on Chemical Engineering in April 1994. In 1991 she started to work at the Chemical Engineering Department of the UCM where she is now Professor and leader of the Cellulose and Paper Research Group.(2013) In 1990 she founded her own company "Ecomanagement". During two years she was the Technical Manager. Since 1993 she works full time for the Complutense University. Her research areas are related to Industrial Processes and Environmental Sciences. She has published 98 research papers in JCR journals, 150 papers in conferences (60 invited), she has collaborated in 11 books, 4 patents and in the organisation of 15 international conferences. She has participated in 17 European projects (14 as responsible) and in 49 industrial projects. She has received the “IIBCC 2008 Excellence Award in Recognition of Outstanding Research on Inorganic Bonded Composites”. She is board member of the European Water Partnership and she is collaborating in the groups of Sustainable Water Management, Water and Energy and Climate Change. She has been Vice-president of the European Fibre and Paper Research Organisations (EFPRO) during 6 years. She participated in the elaboration of the SRA of the FTP (co-leader of paper value chain) and she was member of the Scientific Council and of the WG of Education. She participated in the elaboration of the Vision Document and the SRA of the WSSTP. She has been the COST Spanish representative for the FPS domain for 15 years she is member of the Research Committee of TAPPI.
Thomas Bucheli Agroscope Institute for Sustainability Sciences ISS, Zürich, Switzerland
(2015) Thomas D. Bucheli studied Environmental Sciences at the ETH Zürich (1987-92). He conducted his PhD at Eawag Dübendorf and received his degree in Natural Sciences from the ETH in 1997 (awarded with the ETH’s Otto Jaag-water protection prize). From 1997 until 2001, he was a Postdoc at ETH Zürich, Department of Chemistry, and at the Institute of Applied Environmental Research (ITM), Stockholm University. He has been Head of the Organic Trace Analysis Group at Agroscope ISS since 2001, and leads the Research Group Environmental Analytics at the same institute since 2014.Thomas Bucheli has (co-)authored of more than 80 peer reviewed publications (>4300 WoS citations, H-Index: 30), published >30 other papers, and >120 conference contributions. He has (co-)acquired more than 5 Mio CHF of soft money projects from national and international funding sources.He investigates the occurrence, fate and behaviour of organic chemicals in the agro-environment. His current research focus is on natural toxins, PAHs, carbonaceous nanoparticles, and related sorption and bioavailability studies. Since 2012, he is a (guest) lecturer at ETH.

Robert Duran Research Institute for Materials and Environment, University of Pau, France
(2012) Robert Duran is Professor in Environmental Molecular Microbiology at the University of Pau. Robert has more than 20 years’ experience in environmental microbiology and molecular microbiology research. He is leading a research team of 30 people including people with permanent position (professors and assistant professors, technicians), post-docs and PhD students. His group publishes an average of 20 publications in peer-reviewed journals per year. His research focuses on microbial ecology and diversity, with an emphasis on extreme, polluted or estuarine ecosystems. He employs a wide-range of techniques (from geochemistry to metatranscriptomics) to address fundamental and practical issues. Relevant recent discoveries include the characterisation of the taxonomic and functional microbial-diversity in extreme and contaminated ecosystems: behaviour of sulfate reducing bacteria populations in acid mine drainage and microbial mats according to the fluctuation of environmental parameters, the diversity of ring hydroxylating dioxygenases in polluted microbial mats. Christian Gagnon Environment and Climate Change Canada, Montreal, Canada
Christian Gagnon is a senior researcher in geochemistry at Environment and Climate Change Canada. He obtained his PhD from the University of Quebec/INRS-oceanography and completed his post-doctoral studies on the bioavailability of contaminants at the State University of New York, Stony Brook. His research focuses on the fate and behaviour of chemical contaminants released into the aquatic environment. All of its work aims at a better understanding of the mechanisms of transformation and exposure of metals and emerging substances such as nanomaterials, lanthanides and pharmaceuticals, in waste water discharges and the receiving environment.
Baojing Gu College of Environmental and Resource Sciences / School of Public Affairs, Zhejiang University, China
Dr. Baojing Gu was trained as an ecologist with an emphasis on biogeochemical nitrogen cycling analysis and modelling from Zhejiang University in China and the University of Alberta and McGill University in Canada. After his PhD in 2011, he has a two-year postdoc experience on Economics. Currently, he is co-leading the cost and benefit analyses of global nitrogen use under the framework of International Nitrogen Management System (INMS) to improve our understanding on the interactions between human and the nitrogen cycles. He has published over 70 papers in peer-reviewed journals, including some top-ranked journals such as Nature. His major contributions are in the areas of large-scale biogeochemical nitrogen cycles and their response to natural and socioeconomic factors. He developed the Coupled Human And Natural Systems (CHANS) nitrogen cycling model to explore the interactions between regional/global nitrogen cycles and human activities and how to manage nitrogen cycle for a better global sustainable development. The CHANS model has been applied in many countries including China, Australia, Japan, and recommended as one of the standard nitrogen budget models under the INMS. He attempts to better quantify the cost and benefit of nitrogen use and loss and understand how nitrogen cycling link to policy and management. He found that small farm size potentially leads to overuse of agricultural chemicals with socioeconomic development, and urbanization can release more croplands and benefit food security. Currently, his research interest focuses on sustainable development of agriculture to produce more food with less pollution, involving urbanization and rural development, agricultural resource and environment, policy regulations, management for sustainable development.
Ester Heath Department of Environmental Sciences, Jozef Stefan Institute, Slovenia
(2012) Ester Heath studied Chemistry at Faculty of Natural Sciences, University of Ljubljana, Slovenia. She has been employed at Jožef Stefan Institute in Ljubljana, Slovenia since 1991. She carried out the experimental part of M.Sc. at University of Plymouth, Plymouth, Great Britain and graduated in 1994 (M.Sc.) and 1998 (Ph.D.) in Chemistry at University of Ljubljana, Slovenia. She spent two years on postdoctoral studies at McGill University, Montreal, Canada. Upon her return to Jožef Stefan Institute, she set up a research group to study new emerging contaminants. Currently she is the Head of Laboratory for Organic Analytical Chemistry within the Department of Environmental Sciences, Jožef Stefan Institute and appointed Associate Professor in the Ecotechnology programme at the Jožef Stefan International Postgraduate School in Ljubljana, Slovenia. Her main research interest is environmental organic chemistry and she has dedicated the last decade to the cycling and fate of new emerging contaminants during water treatment and in the environment.
Thomas Hein Institute of Hydrobiology and Aquatic Ecosystem Management, University for Natural Ressources and Life Sciences, Vienna, Austria
(2016) Thomas Hein (1968 Austrian citizen) studied biology and limnology at the University of Vienna. In 1997 he started his PhD work at the Department of Limnology of the University of Vienna with a research grant from the FWF. After the finalization of the PhD thesis in 2000 he got a PostDoc position at the University of Vienna. Since 2005 he has a tenure track position in Limnology at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna (BOKU Vienna) and is working group leader at the WasserCluster Lunz research institute. Since 2008 he is managing director at WasserCluster Lunz and since 2010 Associate Professor at BOKU Vienna.His research career focused on the study of environmental change (flow, extreme events and temperature) and its impacts on river – floodplain systems in temperate and tropical systems. The research also includes effects of restoration and management measures on different ecosystem properties at different temporal and spatial scales. Main topics of research are organic carbon and nutrient cycling, the role of aquatic vegetation (algae and macrophytes), microbial processes and ecosystem metabolism as well as selected topics in biodiversity. A major part of the studies have been performed in the Danube River basin along the main river and tributaries linking different scales starting from the microplot to the ecosystem scale. Intense field observation is coupled with laboratory as well large scale experimental studies and modeling work to analyze underlying mechanisms of ecosystem responses and provide predictive tools for scenario analysis. The fundamental knowledge gained is transferred to stakeholders and authorities to provide strategies and support for the implementation of restoration measures. He was also in involved in several EU Life projects, an EU ETC project in which the application of knowledge was an important aspect. He has been involved in several EU funded projects in FP7 (Wetwin, Dancers, Mars) and is currently involved in an EU H2020 project (AquaCross). He published more than 100 scientific publications (62 in peer-reviewed journals, conference proceedings), 5 book chapters and authored and co-authored more than 100 scientific reports.
Roula Inglesi-Lotz Department of Economics, University of Pretoria, South Africa
Prof Roula Inglesi-Lotz has been an Associate Professor at the Department of Economics at the University of Pretoria since 2014, where she was employed as a Senior lecturer in 2011. She completed her undergraduate studies in Economics at the University of Macedonia, Greece in 2006 and an M.Com in Economics from the University of Pretoria (cum Laude, 2008). She holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Pretoria (graduated in 2011) titled “A sectoral benchmark-and-trade system to improve electricity efficiency in South Africa”, supported with a bursary from the South African National Energy Development Institute (SANEDI). From 2009 until 2016, she was involved in teaching, coordinating, and curriculum development of undergraduate modules, particularly first years in Economics. Since 2016, she has been the coordinator of the research essays of the Honours programme, while teaching Research Methodology and Econometrics at Honours level. In 2015, she designed and presented for the first time in the Department of Economics the Energy and Environmental Economics module. She has presented the module since then annually as an elective for Masters students. Her research interests revolve around energy and environmental economics, applied economics, and the broader development and growth economics field. During the course of her academic career, Prof Inglesi-Lotz has authored and co-authored approximately 70 publications in peer-reviewed journals and has presented a number of them in local and international conferences. She has also participated in technical reports for various stakeholders such as StatsSA, NERSA, Universities South Africa, Department of Energy, Eskom, World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO), Greenpeace, WWF, Department of Science and Technology. Since 2017, she has been an NRF Y-1 rated researcher. Prof Inglesi-Lotz was named the Distinguished Young Woman Researcher in the Humanities and Social Sciences category of the 2017 DST Women in Science Awards. In 2018, Prof Inglesi-Lotz initiated the discussion and facilitated the establishment of the South African Association for Energy Economics (SAAEE), the national affiliate of the International Association for Energy Economics (IAEE) of which she is the elected President for the period 2020/2021. She is nominated for the position of Vice President for Regional Affairs of IAEE for 2021/2022. In 2017, she was selected as a member of the South African Young Academy of Sciences (SAYAS) of which she is elected the 2020 co-chair and the Editor of the PhD Blog; while since 2018, she has been a member of the Global Young Academy (GYA). She was also selected and participated in the 2019 cohort of the Africa Science Leadership Programme (ASLP) in Future Africa, through which she promotes the need for polyphony in science communication.
Roland Kallenborn Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU), Ås, Norway
(2013) Roland Kallenborn is a Professor in Organic Chemistry at the Department for Chemistry, Biotechnology and Food Sciences (IKBM) at the Norwegian University for Life Sciences (UMB) in Ås, Norway. Previously he worked as senior research scientist at the Norwegian institute for Air Research (NILU), department in the Polar Environmental Centre in Tromsø (Norway). For 2005 – 2008, Kallenborn was employed as Professor and Head of Department (Arctic Technology) at the University Centre in Svalbard (Longyearbyen/ Svalbard). Currently, his work focuses mainly on the development of new methods and strategies for the interdisciplinary scientific linkage between trace analytical organochemical technology and bioeffect methods for elucidation of ecotoxicological potential of organochemical xenobiotics. His is author/co-author of ca. 100 peer reviewed scientific publication, 1 monograph and has presented more than 170 oral or poster presentations on international scientific conferences/ workshops and seminars. His recent research interest focuses mainly around three major research topics:- Evaluation of environmental fate and properties of currently identified contaminants (e.g., perfluorinated alkylated substances, brominated flame retardants, pharmaceutical residues and personal care products).- Assessing global long range processes of sparsely investigated anthropogenic contaminants.- Pollution issues in polar regions including risk assessment.- Development of new versatile methods and tools for multi-disciplinary environmental risk evaluations.
Ioannis A. Katsoyiannis Department of Chemistry, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece
Prof. Ioannis A. Katsoyiannis has received his PhD from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in 2003, having spent short research periods in Germany as a DAAD research fellow. Following he conducted post doctoral research firstly at the Technical University of Berlin as an Alexander von Humboldt Foundation research fellow and later at the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology (Eawag) as a recipient of a Marie Curie Individual Fellowship. Afterwards he worked for 4 years as environmental chemical engineer in the industrial sector of power plant chemistry, firstly for Alstom Power in Baden, CH and then for Hitachi Power Europe in Hamburg, DE. In 2014, he was appointed lecturer at the Laboratory of Chemical and Environmental Technology of the department of Chemistry of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and since 2016 he is assistant Professor at the same department. In 2015 he was recipient of the prestigious fellowship from the Swiss National Science Foundation and visited for 3 months the group of Professor Urs von Gunten at EPFL. He has published more than 50 papers in peer reviewed journals, with over 2900 citations and a current h-index 22. He has reviewed manuscripts for more than 40 journals. He is the Chairperson on the division of Chemistry and Environment of the European Chemical Society (EuCheMS-DCE) for the period 2018-2020.
George Z. Kyzas Department of Chemistry, Democritus University of Thrace, Kavala, Greece
Professor George Z. Kyzas was born in Drama (Greece) and studied Chemistry at the Department of Chemistry at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTh). He obtained his BSc, MSc, and PhD degrees from the same Department, expertised in Chemical Technology. He then worked as a PostDoc Researcher at the Department of Chemistry (AUTh) in numerous projects. He is now Full Professor at the Department of Chemistry (Democritus University of Thrace, Kavala, Greece), being the Head of the Department (since 2019). He is also Director of the MSc Cosmetic Chemistry (since 2021) and the Head of Hephaestus Laboratory (School of Science, Democritus University of Thrace, Kavala, Greece). His research interests are the synthesis and characterization of various adsorbent and photocatalytic materials (inorganic, aluminates, polymers, graphenes, agro-food residues, nanomaterials, CNTs, titanium, etc.) for water and wastewaters treatment. His scientific work has been published in more than 280 Papers in international journals with a high impact factor, while he published 8 Books, 35 Chapters in scientific Books and holds 3 Patents. He was also 8 times Guest Editor at Special issues of journals and has more than 100 Announcements (Invited) in International Conferences. His work is widely recognized with 17,000 Citations (h-index 72). His name is included in the list of Highly Cited Researchers for 2022 (Thomson Reuters - Clarivate WoS) [0.1% most impactful Scientists in the World]. His name is included in the list of World Top 2% Scientists for 2019-2022, which is compiled by the Stanford University (USA) based on standardized citation indicators. He has been awarded with fellowships from the Research Committee of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (2009, 2013), the Greek State Scholarship Foundation (2013) and the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (2016). He has also participated in about 25 research projects. Gerhard Lammel Research Centre of Toxic Compounds in Environment, Masaryk University, Brno, Czech Republic/Max Planck Institute for Chemistry, Mainz, Germany
Gerhard Lammel studied Chemistry in Regensburg and Freiburg, Germany, did a doctorate in atmospheric chemistry at the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry, Mainz, Germany (in 1988), and his habilitation in environmental chemistry at University of Hohenheim, Stuttgart, Germany (in 2000). He became a full professor at Masaryk University, Brno, Czech Republic (in 2007). His teaching encompasses atmospheric and environmental chemistry and global environmental change. His research, pursued at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Max Planck Institute for Meteorology, Hamburg, University of Hamburg, Masaryk University’s Research Centre for Toxic Compounds in the Environment (since 2006) and Max Planck Institute for Chemistry (since 2008), has been focusing on aerosol chemistry and total environmental chemistry of long-lived organic pollutants, mostly based on field experiments and on advanced numerical modelling. He has authored some 100 research papers and contributed to a number of scientific assessment reports (UNEP, IPCC, WHO, UNECE, German Advisory Council on Global Change). He has been serving on various committees, was Chair of the Board of the German Chemical Society Environmental Chemistry and Ecotoxicology branch (2007-2010), and is Member of the European Chemical Societies' Division of Chemistry and the Environment.

Shimin Liu is an Associate Professor of Energy and Mineral Engineering at Penn State University and he holds Ph.D. degree in Engineering Sciences from Southern Illinois University. He currently holds Endowed position of Joseph Kreutzberger Early Career Professor of Energy and Mineral Engineering at Penn State. He holds a M.S. degree in Mineral Processing Engineering and a B.S. degree in Environmental Engineering and both from China University of Mining and Technology Beijing. His research interests include rock mechanics, mine ventilation, flow of fluids in porous media; imaging and analysis to study physical structure of rocks; flow-induced micro-structuring of rocks; geomechanical responses of unconventional reservoirs with depletion, safety and health. As PI, he has successfully secured funding from various US federal agencies, including US Department of Energy, US National Science Foundation, CDC-NIOSH, Alpha Foundation, SME Foundation and industrial partners. Out of his research, he has published more than 140 peer-reviewed journal publications. Right now, he is editor-in-chief for International Journal of Coal Science and Technology.

Dr. Wei Liu received her PhD in Environmental Science from the Aix-Marseille University in 2009. From 2010 to 2017, she held several research positions at European Center for Research and Education in Environmental Geoscience (CEREGE) and French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA). In 2017, she joined the University of Geneva, department F.-A Forel for environmental and aquatic sciences as senior fellow in research and teaching. Dr. Liu’s research is focused on the biogeochemistry and ecotoxicology of metals and nanoparticles. She specializes in studying the transformation processes of the nanoparticles in the aquatic environment, the mechanism of interaction at nano-bio interface and the biological effects of nanomaterials at molecular, cellular and organism scale.

Philippe Loubet is an assistant professor in life cycle assessment (LCA) and eco-design at Bordeaux INP. He conducts his research activities at the Institute of Molecular Sciences (Bordeaux, France), focusing on the development of methodologies and the application of LCA to various sectors, including green chemistry, agri-food and urban water systems. His main research interests include the generation of life cycle inventory data and the development of cause-effect pathways for life cycle impact assessment.He holds a doctorate in process engineering from Montpellier SupAgro (2014). Dr Chris Lowe is a Senior Lecturer in Ecology and Environment at the University of Central Lancashire. He gained his PhD in Soil Ecology in 2000 and has more than 50 peer reviewed publications covering a wide range of subjects including biological land remediation, ecotoxicology, environmental monitoring, composting, waste management and carbon management. However, his main research focus is the ecology and applications of earthworms. Current research projects are investigating the use of earthworms as bioindicators of nanoparticles in the soil environment and the development / amendment of standardised earthworm-based toxicity tests.

Elena Maestri obtained her degree in Biology at the University of Pavia (1985). The PhD in Genetics (University of Ferrara, 1989) concerned plant responses to starvation. After obtaining a permanent position at the University of Parma in the group led by Prof Nelson Marmiroli, the research activities shifted towards environmental pollution and phytotechnologies, food safety and authenticity, capacity building. Currently Associate Professor in the University of Parma, she lectures in the degrees of “Biotechnology” and of “Sciences for Nature and Environment”. Her activities also involve participation in the Italian Consortium for Environmental Sciences and in the Executive Board of the International Phytotechnology Society. Assoc. Prof. Luke Mosley has a PhD in environmental chemistry from the University of Otago (New Zealand). Following postdoctoral positions in the USA, New Zealand and Fiji he worked as a Principal Scientist at the South Australian Environmental Protection Authority (EPA). In 2010 he received the South Australian Premier’s Award for his work that was critical to protect water supplies, communities and ecosystems during the extreme ‘Millennium Drought’. In 2015 he accepted a research position at the University of Adelaide (Australia) where he now leads a biogeochemical research group with several postgraduate students and postdoctoral fellows. He lectures undergraduate and postgraduate courses in soil and water resources, management and conservation. Along with mentoring early career scientists, Luke is passionate about using science to solve complex environmental problems for community and government, and to protect the intrinsic values and functions of natural ecosystems for future generations. His group’s current research focus includes studying nutrient dynamics in the Murray-Darling Basin, drought impacts on soil and water quality, developing new techniques to measure and manage soil acidification, and assessing the impact of sea level rise and tidal restoration on coastal soil biogeochemistry. Luke was President of Soil Science Australia from 2018-2020, has co-authored national guidance on acid sulfate soils, and was on the national technical committee developing a Emissions Reduction Fund method for blue carbon in coastal wetlands and restoration projects. Dr. Kelvin Tsun Wai Ng is a Professor of Environmental Systems Engineering at University of Regina, Canada. Kelvin obtained his Bachelor's and Master’s degrees in Civil Engineering from McMaster University, Canada, and his doctoral degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering at the HKUST, Hong Kong. His fields of interest are waste management systems design, waste model optimization, and data driven waste policy. Kelvin has received several awards in both teaching and research. Dr. Dr. Sami Rtimi is a microbiologist and a photochemist with expertise in the design of tailored inorganic catalysts, their synthesis and characterization. He was awarded a Ph.D. in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering from Swiss Federal Institute of Technology-EPFL (Switzerland) and a Doctorate in Biological Sciences (Microbiology) from the University of Carthage (Tunisia). He is investigating the structure-reactivity relationship of functional/smart coatings for targeted environmental applications. He is expert in coupling nanostructured materials for targeted responses at the solid-air- and the solid-liquid-interfaces. With an h-index of 24 (more than 450 citation/year), he published more than 120 articles in peer-reviewed journals (27 articlesin Q1 journals of Catalysis; 36 articles in Q1 journals of Engineering; 31 articles in Q1 journals of process and technology), patents, several book-chapters and presented numerous communications at international conferences/meetings. His work is oriented towards (i) preparation of self-sterilizing materials/coatings, (ii) materials characterization using up-to-date surface science techniques and (iii) understanding the mechanism behind the observed reactivity. Michel Sablier has graduated in chemistry from the Université Pierre et Marie Curie, Paris, where he obtained his PhD in 1992. After a post-doctoral training in the Gorlaeus Laboratories, Leiden (the Netherlands), he joined the CNRS in 1994, and holds now a position of Senior Scientist. His scientific activity has been dedicated to mass spectrometry and its applications in several fields: instrumental development, gas-phase studies of ion-molecule and ion-radical reactions, detection of emerging pollutants in the environment. In particular, the development of original methods for the characterization of radical species gave him the opportunity to develop collaborations in Japan where he stayed for one year in 2000-2001 with a fellowship from the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (National Institute for Environmental Studies, Tsukuba). Beside fundamental chemistry studies, he has always motivated a deep interest for the applications of mass spectrometry to the domain of Cultural Heritage.Three years ago, he joined the Centre de Recherche sur la Conservation at the Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle, Paris. His research now addresses on topics related to conservation science. With a particular focus on cellulosic materials, his current research work concerns the characterization of markers of origin in traditional Asian papers, and the understanding of deterioration mechanisms and contamination mechanisms in ancient papers. All of these studies use modern mass spectrometry methods. Michel Sablier joined ESPR as an editorial board member mid-2012.

Marcus Schulz studied Biology and Geology in Goettingen and obtained his Ph.D. in Biology in 1996 from the University of Goettingen. Dr. Aaron Specht is currently an Assistant Professor in the School of Health Sciences at Purdue University. Dr. Specht also serves as a Visiting Scientist at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, where he is the Director of the Trace Metals Lab as part of their NIEHS Center Grant. He received his BS in Honors Physics and his PhD in Medical Physics and Exposure Assessment from Purdue University. He did his Postdoctoral training and became a Research Associate at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health where he was trained in occupational and environmental health and epidemiology. She has authored over 160 journal papers, among which over 60 were published in international journals, and these papers have been cited 400 times by SCI papers. Besides, she is the coauthor of 10 monographs and text books in Chinese. She was honored as Excellent Young Fellow by Ministry of Education, China in 2004. She was elected as National Demonstrating Teacher in 2007. She won the Second Prize on Natural Science honored by Ministry of Education in 2010.

He has been Marie Curie Fellow at MiTAC (Micro and Trace Analysis Centre) of the University of Antwerp (Belgium). He is the Scientific Manager of the "Micro X-ray Lab" at the University of Bari and Vice-President of IUPAC Division VI "Chemistry and the Environment". His main research interests are the biogeochemistry of trace elements in the environment and the use of X-ray analytical techniques to study agricultural and environmental samples.

Gérald Thouand received his PhD degree in Microbiology from the University of Nancy, France, in 1993. Rongrong Wan is a professor in Nanjing Institute of Geography and Limnology, Chinese Academy of Sciences. Also, she serves as a professor in University of Chinese Academy of Sciences. She earned her Ph.D. degree in Geography from Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2005. She visited the Department of Geography, The Ohio State University from September, 2010 to September, 2011 as a visiting scholar. Her research interests include land-use and land-cover changes (LULCC) and their hydrological, environmental and ecological effects, assessment of watershed ecosystem services, spatially distributed watershed modeling, and wetland ecohydrology. She is teaching watershed geography in University of Chinese Academy of Sciences and has been supervising 15 Master’s students and 2 Ph.D. students. She has obtained four grants from the National Natural Science Foundation of China as a principal investigator. She has published 5 books/chapters, over 100 peer-reviewed academic journal papers and conference proceedings related to geographic, ecologic and environmental sciences.

Ta Yeong Wu received his BEng (Hons), MEng and PhD from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (National University of Malaysia) in 2001, 2003 and 2009, respectively. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Wu is currently a Chemical Engineering lecturer and researcher in the School of Engineering, Monash University Malaysia. He is a Graduate Engineer registered under Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) and he has been awarded Chartered Chemical Engineer status and elected to Chartered Membership of Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE). At Monash University Malaysia, he is one of the founding members of Monash-Industry Palm Oil Education and Research Platform (MIPO) and at present, he is coordinating a Master Course offered by MIPO. Due to his recognition in works associated with palm oil and oil palm biomass, he is elected as a Secretary of IChemE’s Palm Oil Processing Special Interest Group (POPSIG), which provides a forum to enable knowledge transfer, exchange of best practices and experience sharing among all the people who are interested in the palm oil industry.Ta Yeong Wu’s current research interests include sustainable solid waste management, biorefinery, biofuel production, and wastewater treatment. Until now, he has published a book, a book chapter and more than 70 peer-reviewed articles (h-index > 30 and total citations of more than 2500). From 2009 till 2018, he managed to secure a significant sum of research funding, mainly on research works related to environmental science and engineering, as a principal investigator. As a main supervisor, he has guided 6 PhD students and 2 Master students until completions and presently he is supervising 4 Master students. Currently, he is serving as an Associate Editor for “International Journal of Environmental Science and Technology” as well as Editorial Board Member for “Electronic Journal of Biotechnology”, “Journal of Water Process Engineering” and “International Journal of Recycling of Organic Waste in Agriculture”. Also, he is an active reviewer for numerous high-impact journals, thesis, and international grants as well as serving as a Scientific Committee in several international conferences. Due to his recognition in research works, he was the recipient of Malaysia’s Research Star Award 2017 and named as the Frontier Researcher in the Area of Engineering by Ministry of Higher Education, Malaysia.

Professor Zhihong Xu is involved in various research topics: biogeochemical processes of carbon and nutrients in terrestrial ecosystems from agricultural, agroforestry and forest ecosystems; development and application of innovative stable isotope, biomolecular and physiological techniques for assessing both genetic and environmental controls of plant water and nutrient use efficiency; soil fertility and plant nutrition; environmental management and food security and innovative tree ring technologies for unravelling long-term and complex impacts of climate change and local management/historical episodes on biogeochemical cycles, ecosystem productivity and sustainability. He is the Director of “Environmental Future Research Institute” at Griffith University (Brisbane, Australia). Since 2006, he has also served as the Chair for the Forest Soils Working Group of International Union of Soil Science. He is also currently the Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Soils and Sediments (JSS), a sister journal of ESPR. He has also editorial duties in various journals (e.g. Environ. Geochem. Health and Pedosphere). He is a regular assessor of research grant applications from leading international funding bodies (e.g. National Science Foundation of USA, Natural Science and Engineering Research Council of Canada, Canada Foundation for Innovation, and the International Science Foundation in Sweden). Dr. Xianliang Yi is currently an assistant professor of ecotoxicology in School of Ocean Science and Technology at Dalian University of Technology. Xianliang Yi received his MSc in Ecological Engineering in Korea University in 2009 and gained his PhD in 2014 from The University of Hong Kong under the supervision of Prof. Kenneth M.Y. Leung. He has more than 10 years’ experience in ecotoxicology of different environmental pollutants and ecological risk assessment. His main research interests involve the ecotoxicology of POPs, nanomaterials and microplastics. In addition, he has a particular research interest in the toxicity of chemical mixtures and their interacting mechanisms. He is currently working on the combined toxicity of nanoparticles/microplastics and POPs, and transcriptomics or metabolomics of zooplanktons upon exposure to toxic algal blooms.

Weiming Zhang received his PhD degree of Environmental Engineering from Nanjing University (China). He has been employed in Nanjing University since 2005. In 2010 he was promoted to be the full professor of Department of Environmental Engineering at Nanjing University. Also, he serves as the deputy director of State Key Laboratory of Pollution Control and Resource Reuse, and the director of State Environmental Protection Engineering Center for Organic Chemical Industrial Waste Water Disposal and Resources Reuse (China). His work focused on environmental material-based water and wastewater treatment. In particular, he is interested in development of adsorption, membrane filtration, and advanced oxidation technologies for treatment and reuse of industrial wastewater. He has published nearly 100 peer-reviewed papers and holds 62 patents in the related fields.
