Wireless Networks - Cybersecurity and Data Protection in Wireless Environments

Overview:

With the explosion of connected devices, new technological paradigms have appeared. Beyond purely cloud-based approaches, edge, fog and dew computing approaches are on the rise on top of wireless networks.

Internet of Things (IoTs), along with the advances in wireless networking including 5G, 6G and other wireless and low-range technologies (e.g., Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc.) enable a substantial amount of new and highly personalized services.

Despite their undeniable advantages, this technological trend comes with a substantial number of threats. As they gather and process data related to users, it is essential to ensure that it cannot be abused. Otherwise, sophisticated attacks may be carried out -- the combination of fine-grained data can lead to extremely targeted cyberattacks. On the other hand, the security of the devices at stake cannot be taken for granted. Indeed, a substantial amount of attacks have already been materialized to IoT devices due to their poor design or leveraging their supply chain.

This special issue aims to gather novel research contributions that focus on all the stages that any defender may follow to address these threats. Thus, their identification, characterization, blockage, remediation or even the eventual post-event recovery are at stake. The relationship with wireless networks must be stressed. Practical approaches including comprehensive (and repeatable) experimentation with real-life applicability are favoured. As for the limits on the scope, blockchain-related technologies are discouraged.

This Special Issue will be formed by an open call, and a number of extended versions (more than 30% of new content) of the best papers of the Spanish Jornadas Nacionales de Investigación en Ciberseguridad (JNIC) cybersecurity conference (https://2023.jnic.es (this opens in a new tab)). Please note that a new round of reviews will be required for these submissions.

Topics

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following scope:

  • Lightweight encryption techniques for wireless environments
  • Early detection of IoT-related attacks
  • Remediation techniques for wireless environments
  • Data protection mechanisms suitable for wireless environments, including data privacy for the IoT.
  • Uses of Artificial Intelligence in wireless environments for cyberdefence
  • Attack characterization in wireless environments
  • Secure architectures for wireless environments
  • Cryptographic protocols for wireless environments
  • Security, privacy and trust for wireless environments
  • IoT-related legal issues in the field of cybersecurity
