Research in Higher Education - Editorial team changes July 2023

As of July 1, 2023, the Research in Higher Education editorial team has made several transitions. Since beginning in this role in January of 2021, I have found it to be quite challenging to provide timely feedback to our authors, and in the last few months I have worked with our existing team to come up with a new structure that will make sure that we are providing timely turnaround for manuscripts.

First, Lauren Schudde, Associate Professor in the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy at the University of Texas at Austin will join me as a co-editor of the journal. Lauren has done truly excellent work as an associate editor over the last two and a half years, and I’m really pleased that she has agreed to take on the additional responsibilities of a co-editor. In this new role, Lauren will be able to help make sure that we are able to both provide timely responses to manuscripts and be in touch with authors about the status of their manuscripts.

Next, Rachel Baker, Associate Professor in the Policy, Organizations, Leadership, and Systems Division at the University of Pennsylvania and Robert Kelchen, Professor and Chair of the Education Leadership and Policy Studies department at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville will join the editorial team as associate editors. Both Rachel and Robert are long-serving members of the editorial board and we couldn’t be more excited that they have agreed to serve in this role.

I asked each of the associate editors who joined the journal when I signed on to commit to working in that role for two and a half years. I’m very pleased to let you know that Frim Ampaw, Professor and Chair of the Department of Advanced Studies, Leadership and Policy at Morgan State University has agreed to remain as associate editor for the remaining two and half years of my term. Frim has been a wonderful colleague to work with and has shown a deep commitment to using the paper-review process to sharpen and improve the manuscripts we are sent.

Last, Marvin Titus, Associate Professor of Counseling, Higher Education and Special Education at the University of Maryland, College Park has chosen to step down after completing his commitment to the journal. Marvin has been a regular contributor to Research in Higher Education, a longstanding editorial board member, and an outstanding associated editor. I will miss his contributions to the journal, but I deeply appreciate everything he has done for this community.

In my initial application for this position, I described four areas of focus: rigor, efficiency, impact, and transparency. Our goal with these structural changes is to maintain the level of rigor that we’ve established while improving our efficiency, impact, and transparency.
