Photosynthesis Research - Special Issue of Photosynthesis Research for Sustainability, connected to the PHERS 2023 Conference in Istanbul
Photosynthesis Research welcomes submissions to a special issue entitled “Photosynthesis Research for Sustainability”, connected to the 11th International “Photosynthesis and Hydrogen Energy Research for Sustainability – 2023” Meeting (this opens in a new tab), which will be held in Istanbul from 3-9 July 2023.
Photosynthesis represents the central process in nature that is responsible for using solar energy to convert about 100 gigatons of carbon dioxide into the energy-rich carbohydrates each year that ultimately support almost all ecosystems. The key step for the conversion of solar energy into chemical energy takes place in molecular machines known as photosystems and performed by plants, algae, and some bacteria. Despite the many discoveries and achievements in recent decades, many aspects of photosynthesis remain unexplored.
Many researchers globally are working on understanding how photosynthesis functions, and how this process can be made more efficient and applied towards reaching the United Nations sustainability goals. This special issue invites articles featuring original research, reviews, and new methods relating to the application of photosynthetic mechanisms towards sustainability. Research on natural and artificial systems are welcome.

The “Photosynthesis and Hydrogen Energy Research for Sustainability – 2023” Meeting is an event that brings together many of these researchers to discuss past, present, and future research on photosynthesis and hydrogen energy, from the molecular to a global level. It will provide an exciting scientific program covering the breadth and depth of photosynthesis and hydrogen energy, from fundamental and applied aspects of research to artificial photosynthesis and nanobiotechnology.
This meeting series is held in various countries globally and past events have been dedicated to some respected researchers in the field. The forthcoming instalment of the meeting will honor Robert (Bob) Blankenship (USA), Győző Garab (Hungary), Michael Graetzel (Switzerland), Norman (Norm) Huner (Canada), and Gunnar Oquist (Sweden).
