Phenomenology and the Cognitive Sciences - Guidelines for Book Reviews - Phenomenology and the Cognitive Sciences

Thank you for agreeing to submit a book review to Phenomenology and the Cognitive Sciences (PCS). Below, you’ll find details about timeline, review processes, and  formatting. If you have any additional questions, please contact the book review editor, see here (this opens in a new tab) for details.

Submission and Timeline

  • Once you have been invited to submit a book review, please complete the review within three months. If you will need more time to complete the review, please contact the book review editor as soon as possible.
  • If you do not have a copy of the book that you will review, you may contact the publisher directly to request a complementary review copy (or, if you prefer, the book review editor can make this request on your behalf).
  • Once you have completed the draft of your review, email it directly to the book review editor
  • The editor will provide initial feedback on your book review before asking you to upload it to the PCS editorial manager (this opens in a new tab).
  • Once you have uploaded your submission, it will go out for peer review and must receive at least one positive recommendation before acceptance. At this stage, peer reviewers may recommend acceptance, revisions, or rejection of the manuscript.

Formatting Guidelines

  • Reviews should be 2,500 to 3,000 words, inclusive of notes and references.
  • Reviews do not require an abstract or keywords.
  • The title should be formatted as follows: “Review of [Author], [Title], [City]: [Publisher],
[Year]”. For example, a review of Dan Zahavi’s Self and Other: Exploring Subjectivity, Empathy, and Shame would be titled as follows: “Review of Dan Zahavi, Self and Other: Exploring Subjectivity, Empathy, and Shame, Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2014”.
  • Please follow the style and reference guide for PCS found here (this opens in a new tab).
