Optical and Quantum Electronics - CALL FOR PAPERS: Role of AI and IoT in advanced optical systems - II

New Content Item

Day to day changes in human lifestyle has attracted researchers to design and develop an advanced optical system through which they can make their life easier. These advanced optical systems have multifaceted applications such as high-speed communication, networking, photonics, smart cities, healthcare, energy, and environment. The science of optics is essential to the development of technologies and has revolutionized our ability to share information across the globe. The future and full potential of advanced optical systems can be realised with the support of artificial intelligence (AI) and internet of things (IoT).

AI and IoT plays a significant role in development of new technologies and upgrading them to its advanced level. The convergence of AI (Artificial Intelligence) and IoT can redefine the way industries, business, and economies functions. Combining these two streams benefits the common person and specialists alike. While IoT deals with devices interacting using the internet, AI makes the devices learn from their data and experience. The AI and IoT combined with optical technology provide merits such as easy to cover large distance, immune to electromagnetic currents/radiation, low energy consumption, cyber secure, no energy needed on sensing location (passive sensing), and intrinsically safe. The improvement of the performance of telecommunication networks by the application of AI-based techniques has become an area under extensive research over the past decades, affecting areas of transmission, switching and network management. Optical communication networks and systems have not stayed on the side lines but have started to adopt this discipline towards AI-based optical networking, from photonic devices to control and management. The AI-based techniques can be used in optical transmission, ranging from the characterization and operation of network components to performance monitoring, mitigation of nonlinearities, and quality of transmission estimation. These advanced optical systems will act as a replacement for the existing system which are bulky in size, requiring benchtop setup, and high power consumption. These advanced optical systems were employed to have a significant impact in the environmental applications and supports for the development of green future. The ongoing and new technical findings are an assurance that these IoT and Ai enabled optical systems will surely bring important transformations in the new domain.

In this regard, a platform is always in need to share the ideas and views of interdisciplinary researchers relating to the component developments and their applications towards the development of AI and IoT enabled advanced optical systems. This topical collection explores the novel concepts and developments with a long-term goal of AI and IoT based advanced optical systems fostered by the technological advances of advanced materials and components in a wide spectrum of applications. We invite authors from both industries and academia to submit original research, short communications, perspectives and review articles that cover the design, implementation, and optimization with the specific focus on design, development, fabrication, and applications of AI and IoT enabled advanced optical systems.

This topical collection focuses on AI and IoT based advanced optical systems for various applications mainly including (but not limited to) the following aspects:

  • applications of AI and IoT in advanced optical systems
  • advanced optical systems for 5G/6G communications
  • AI and IoT based machine language for advanced optical systems
  • AI and IoT in Photonics
  • advanced optical techniques for energy and environment applications
