Multimedia Tools and Applications - Call for Papers: Recent Advances in Biometrics Based on Biomedical Information [1238]

Summary and Scope

Biometrics can be defined as a technology which recognizes individuals by their physical or behavioral characteristics. This common definition is often employed by considering Biometrics as a security solution to deal with the identification or verification of individuals.

Recently, a new class of biometrics has emerged, utilizing biomedical traits. Known as Hidden-Biometrics, this class encompasses a wide range of biosignals, including EEG, ECG, and EMG signals, as well as the imaging of concealed parts of the human body using modalities such as X-ray and MRI. In addition, certain behavioural signals and data also fall under this category. These unique and confidential biomedical traits are extremely valuable in identifying individuals, as they are difficult to replicate or forge. By using these modalities, it is possible to prevent identity fraud and preserve user privacy.

Authors of selected papers presented at the conference are invited to submit extended and improved versions to this special issue. Methods using Artificial Intelligence, such as, Machine-Learning, Deep-learning, including Generative Adversarial Networks GANs are encouraged. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:

● Electroencephalography based Biometrics
● Electromyogram based Biometrics
● Electrocardiogram based Biometrics
● X-ray imaging and Magnetic Resonance Imaging based Biometrics
● Behavioral of Biometrics: emerging modalities
● Multimodal approaches
● Machine Learning for Biomedical, Behavioral and Hidden Biometrics
● Deep Learning for Biomedical, Behavioral and Hidden Biometrics
● Fraud detection
● Data protection and data privacy
● Ethical and social implications
● Usability and accessibility
● Trustworthiness and reliability

Submission Guidelines
Authors should prepare their manuscript according to the Instructions for Authors available from the Multimedia Tools and Applications website (this opens in a new tab). Authors should submit through the online submission site at https://www.editorialmanager.com/mtap/default.aspx (this opens in a new tab) and select “SI: Recent Advances in Biometrics Based on Biomedical Information” when they reach the “Article Type” step in the submission process. Submitted papers should present original, unpublished work, relevant to the topics of the special issue. All submitted papers will be evaluated on the basis of relevance, significance of contribution, technical quality, scholarship, and quality of presentation, by at least three independent reviewers. It is the policy of the journal that no submission, or substantially overlapping submission, be published or be under review at another journal or conference at any time during the review process. Please note that the authors of selected papers presented at BioSMART 2023 are invited to submit an extended version of their contributions by taking into consideration both the reviewers’ comments on their conference paper, and the feedback received during presentation at the conference. It is worth clarifying that the extended version is expected to contain a substantial scientific contribution, e.g., in the form of new algorithms, experiments or qualitative/quantitative comparisons, and that neither verbatim transfer of large parts of the conference paper nor reproduction of already published figures will be tolerated. The extended versions of BioSMART papers will undergo the standard, rigorous journal review process and be accepted only if well-suited to the topic of this special issue and meeting the scientific level of the journal. Final decisions on all papers are made by the Editor in Chief.
