Description
The Special Issue aims to provide new insights in modelling and control of innovative structures and multiscale materials. Discovery and promotion of new knowledge about mechanical behaviours involving size effects and multiple characteristic scale lengths are encouraged. Unconventional responses of multiscale systems, nanostructures, metamaterials and smart devices for vibration control will be investigated from theoretical, computational and experimental perspectives. Topics in nano-science and nano-engineering, such as modelling and assessment of scale effects in nanostructures, are suggested as possible contributions. In-depth analysis of complex scale phenomena characterizing miniaturized electro-mechanical systems is encouraged. Further goals concern modelling of smart and innovative devices for structural control, isolation strategies and energy harvesting. New developments in vibration control techniques will be promoted. Applications of unconventional materials and innovative systems are expected as outcomes.

This special issue aims to collect interdisciplinary contributions selected for their originality and methodologic approach within this context.

Submission guidelines
All papers must be prepared in accordance with the Instructions for Authors at: https://www.springer.com/journal/11012/submission-guidelines (this opens in a new tab). Authors should submit via the online submission site (this opens in a new tab) and select article type “SI - Multiscale Dynamics and Nanostructures: Mechanical Modelling and Control”.

Submitted papers should present original, unpublished work, relevant to one of the topics of the special issue. All papers will be evaluated on the basis of relevance, significance of contribution, technical quality, scholarship, and quality of presentation by at least two reviewers. It is the policy of the journal that no submission, or substantially overlapping submission, be published or be under review at another journal or conference at any time during the review process. Final decisions on all papers are made by the Editor-in-Chief.

Meet the Guest Editors:
New Content ItemChristoph Adam received a Master in Engineering in Civil Engineering with honors from TU Wien in 1990. He completed his Doctor of Engineering Sciences with honors at TU Wien, with his Advisor being Prof. Franz Ziegler in 1994. He also completed a habilitation in “Mechanics”, at TU Wien in 2000. Prof. Adam is the recipient of multiple awards such as the Kardinal-Innitzer-Promotion Prize (Kardinal-Innitzer-Förderungspreis) in recognition of outstanding scientific performance, Austria (2001). He was a Max-Kade Visiting Scholar at the Blume Center of Earthquake Engineering, Stanford University (2001-2003) and has been a Professor of Applied Mechanics, Universität Innsbruck since 2006. He has been the Head of the Department of Basic Sciences in Engineering Sciences, Universität Innsbruck since 2017. Moreover, he was a Chairman of the Board of Austrian Association for Earthquake Engineering and Structural Dynamics from 2017 to 2023. Since 2023, he has also been serving in the position of Chairman of the Faculty Council, Faculty of Engineering Sciences, Universität Innsbruck. He is an Editorial Board member at Acta Mechanica and the International Journal of Structural Stability and Dynamics. His research interests include Structural dynamics (analytical, numerical, stochastic, experimental); earthquake engineering; bridge dynamics; soil dynamics; structural control; structural health monitoring; composite structures; structural stability. He is ranked within top 2% of the most cited researchers in “Civil Engineering”, composite indicator by Ioannids et al. (2020, 2021, 2022, 2023) based on the citation database Scopus.

He is a professor of structural mechanics at the Department of Structures for Engineering and Architecture, University of Naples Federico II and the Coordinator of AIMETA Group Multiscale and Nanostructure Mechanics (2022); http://bit.ly/3FcUSDw. He is also the Local Coordinator of MIUR PRIN 2017 Multiscale Innovative Materials and Structures and of MUR PRIN 2022 PNRR Nonlocal modelling of nano-coatings and the Principal Investigator of MUR PRIN 2022 Nonlocal Mechanics of Innovative Soft Nanostructures. Moreover, Prof. Barretta is on the Editorial Board of Acta Mechanica, Archive of Applied Mechanics, Nanomaterials and other international journals. His research interests include multiscale structures; nano-engineered materials and structures; generalized continua; homogenization; nonlinear constitutive relations; geometric methods in nonlinear continuum mechanics; variational methods; variable mass dynamic systems; solid-fluid interaction with applications to turbines, jets, rockets and sprinklers; thermoelasticity; waves, phase transitions, nonlinear shells. He was named the Top Italian Scientist in the Engineering Area from Single Year Career in 2017. He is also on the top list of 90 scholars of University of Naples Federico II, database of PloS Biology 100,000 top world scientists (http://bit.ly/37ox6Uk). He was ranked #714 in the world and #12 in Italy among Top Scientists in 2023 (http://bit.ly/3M5nhPl).

New Content ItemAda Amendola has a Master's Degree in Civil Engineering (magna cum laude) from the University of Salerno, Italy (2013) and a Ph.D. in Structural Engineering and Building and Urban Restoration, University of Salerno with her Advisor being Prof. Fernando Fraternali (February, 2017). She is an associate professor of mathematical physics at the Department of Civil Engineering (DICIV) of the University of Salerno (UNISA). She is a Secretary of AIMETA Group Multiscale and Nanostructure Mechanics (2022); http://bit.ly/3FcUSDw. She is also a Local Coordinator of MUR PRIN 2022 The mathematics and mechanics of nonlinear wave propagation in solids. Prof. Amendola is a Principal Investigator of MUR PRIN PNRR 2022 SUSTainable composite structures for energy-harvesting and carbon-storing BUILDings (SUSTBUILD) and of MAECI “Next-generation structures for natural disasterproof buildings” (NEXTBUILDING). Her research interests include analytical study on the propagation of shear waves in fiberreinforced materials using the classical theory of nonlinear continuum mechanics, which allows the fibers to be arranged in any direction as well as the design and the mathematical and mechanical modeling of innovative materials and structures.
