Meccanica - Special Issue: Sixty Years of Thermodynamics of Continuous Media (1963-2023)

Guest Editors:
Prof. Vito Antonio Cimmelli, University of Basilicata, Italy
Prof. David Jou, Autonomous University of Barcelona, Spain
Prof. Antonio Sellitto, University of Salerno, Italy

Submission Status: Open   |   Submission Deadline: 30 April 2024

Summary and scope
This Special Issue aims to present the state of the art in current research on the thermodynamics of continuous media. Additionally, it commemorates the sixtieth anniversary of the publication of the article by B. D. Coleman and W. Noll in Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal., vol. 13, pp. 167-178, 1963, where the celebrated Coleman-Noll procedure for the exploitation of second law of thermodynamic was first introduced.

This Special Issue is by invitation only.

Submission guidelines
All papers must be prepared in accordance with the Instructions for Authors at: https://www.springer.com/journal/11012/submission-guidelines (this opens in a new tab). Authors should submit online via the online submission site (this opens in a new tab) and select article type “SI - Sixty Years of Thermodynamics of Continuous Media (1963-2023)”.

Submitted papers should present original, unpublished work, relevant to one of the topics of the Special Issue. All papers will be evaluated on the basis of relevance, significance of contribution, technical quality, scholarship, and quality of presentation by at least two reviewers. It is the policy of the journal that no submission, or substantially overlapping submission, be published or be under review at another journal or conference at any time during the review process.

Please note that the authors of selected papers presented at the JETC 2023 are invited to submit an extended version of their contributions by taking into consideration both the reviewers’ comments on their conference paper, and the feedback received during presentation at the conference. It is worth clarifying that the extended version is expected to contain a substantial scientific contribution, e.g., in the form of new algorithms, experiments or qualitative/quantitative comparisons, and that neither verbatim transfer of large parts of the conference paper nor reproduction of already published figures will be tolerated. The extended versions of the JETC 2023 papers will undergo the standard, rigorous journal review process and be accepted only if well-suited to the topic of this Special Issue and meeting the scientific level of the journal. Final decisions on all papers are made by the Editor-in-Chief.

Meet the Guest Editors:

New Content ItemVito Antonio Cimmelli is full professor of Mathematical Physics at the Department of Mathematics, Computer Science and Economics of the University of Basilicata, Potenza, Italy. He authored some one-hundred scientific publications in the fields of mechanics of continuous systems and thermodynamics of irreversible processes.

New Content ItemDavid Jou was full professor of Physics of Condensed Matter at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona until his retirement in 2018. He is a researcher in non-equilibrium thermodynamics and has published some three-hundred research papers in international journals, and eight books.

New Content ItemAntonio Sellitto is an associate professor of Mathematical Physics at the Department of Industrial Engineering of the University of Salerno, Italy. His research interests are mainly focused on non-equilibrium thermodynamics theories connected to the heat transfer at nanoscale. He is the author of more than 70 scientific publications in international journals.
