Landscape Ecology - Improving landscape sustainability across urban and rural regions in a changing world

Theme

Landscape sustainability refers to “the capacity of a landscape to consistently provide long-term, landscape-specific ecosystem services essential for maintaining and improving human well-being” (Wu, 2013). Currently, urban and rural landscapes are profoundly affected by climate change, socioeconomic development, pandemics, and regional conflicts, posing huge challenges to the realization of United Nation Sustainable Development Goals 2: Zero Hunger (this opens in a new tab)3: Good Health & Well-being (this opens in a new tab), 11: Sustainable Cities & Communities (this opens in a new tab), 12: Responsible Consumption & Production (this opens in a new tab), 13: Climate Action (this opens in a new tab), and 15: Life on Land (this opens in a new tab). In order to meet these challenges, we must better understand the impacts of environmental and socioeconomic changes on the sustainability of urban and rural landscapes, as well as learning lessons from successful and failed landscape design/planning practices. A central issue in the science and practice of landscape sustainability hinges on the landscape pattern-ecosystem services-human wellbeing nexus—which is the theme of this collection.

We sincerely invite researchers, especially Students and Early Career Researchers (this opens in a new tab)1, to submit manuscripts on the following topics:

  • Theoretical and empirical studies on the landscape pattern-ecosystem services-human wellbeing nexus, its dynamics and associated driving mechanisms in urban/rural landscapes, urban-rural continuums, and urban agglomerations under climate change, human activities, pandemics, regional conflicts, and so forth.
  • Methodological advancements for landscape sustainability, particularly through applications of geospatial techniques, big data, machine learning, and advanced numerical simulation.
  • Case studies in landscape/urban planning, land system architecture, and geo-design for creating and maintaining sustainable landscapes.

Each contribution should indicate explicitly which of the above topics it addresses. This collection accepts all types of submissions including Original research, Short communications, Review articles, and Perspectives (this opens in a new tab) of which Reviews articles and Perspectives are particularly welcome.

About the Guest Editors

Dr. Zhifeng Liu is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Geographical Science in Beijing Normal University, China. His research interests include landscape sustainability, urban sustainability and geodesign. Currently, Dr. Liu is focusing on urban sustainability in drylands.

Dr. Yupeng Liu is an Associate Professor at the Institute of Urban Environment (IUE), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), Xiamen, China. His research interests include industrial ecology, urban ecology, and landscape sustainability. Dr. Liu is now focusing on global urban 3-D growth prediction and related resource and environment impact assessment.

Dr. Qian Cao is an Associate Professor at China University of Geosciences, Wuhan, China. She has an academic background in ecology and geography. Dr. Cao’s research is focused on understanding landscape and climate change interactions, including the impacts of changing landscape patterns on climate processes, urbanization impacts on climate, and landscape-based approaches to climate change mitigation and adaptation. An important ongoing focus of her research is to understand ecosystem services, human well-being, and landscape sustainability. 

Dr. Qun Ma is an Associate Professor at the School of Environmental and Geographical Sciences, Shanghai Normal University, China. Her main research areas are land use/cover change and landscape sustainability with a particular focus on China's urbanization pattern, driving force and environmental impact, as well as regional sustainable evaluation. In recent years, Dr. Ma has used comprehensive methods such as remote sensing, geographic information system and mathematical statistical analysis.
