Journal of Science Education and Technology - Special Issue Call for Papers - Intersections of Mind and Machine: Exploring the Convergence of Generative Artificial Intelligence, Science Education, and Pre-Service Teachers

The advancement in machine learning and neural networks has catalyzed significant breakthroughs in generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) (Li et al., 2023; Wang, 2019). These technological changes are impacting science education in different ways, introducing a range of new opportunities, challenges, and tensions (Zhai, 2023; Cooper, 2023). Amidst these developments, there is a burgeoning discourse on the intersections between science education and GenAI, as illustrated by Billingsley et al. (2023). A significant gap, however, remains in the literature about research on pre-service teachers’ (PST) application of GenAI in science education (Cooper, 2023). Consequently, the objective of this special issue is to spotlight research that addresses the convergence of GenAI, science education and pre-service teachers. This invitation extends to researchers, educators, and policymakers who are keen to explore how GenAI technologies have impacted the experiences, perceptions, and/or training of PSTs in science education. We encourage submissions that investigate the use of text, audio, and image GenAI tools and welcome empirical research about the application of GenAI and/or stakeholder perspectives, novel conceptual frameworks, and detailed case studies. This issue represents an important opportunity to advance our understanding of GenAI’s use in science education, seeking to foster a rich dialogue that bridges theoretical insights and practical applications in preparing the next generation of educators.
