Introduction to NDE 4.0

The fourth industrial revolution is fueled by informatization, digitization, crosslinking, and networks; and survives on data for its feedback loops. One of its largest and most valuable data sources is Nondestructive Evaluation (NDE). Industry 4.0 leads to improved production and design by analyzing data stored in Digital Twins provided by the Industrial Internet of Things using, for example, 5G wireless connections. Measures like artificial intelligence, big data processing, or augmented reality allow us to evaluate and visualize this data. Blockchains allow modification-proof storage and traceability.

This development will lead to big changes in the field of Nondestructive Evaluation. First, Industry 4.0 emerging technologies can be used to enhance NDE technologies, data processing and processes. Second, a statistical analysis of NDE data provides insight into reliability, inspection performance, training status, consistency, and value of the inspections. Finally, NDE is the ideal data source for Industry 4.0. All these developments and more constitute what we call NDE 4.0.

Special issue topics

In this special Issue, we welcome methodological contributions to the field of NDE 4.0; for example, in terms of novel deep learning approaches and applications of innovative techniques to relevant scenarios from medical imaging.
